COMMEMORATING the 75th Anniversary of the Dionne
Rumble VFW Post 7227 of Carthage, New York

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to commend and
support the purposeful cause of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) of
the United States of America, recognizing its long and sustained
commitment to the principles of democracy and freedom so revered by this
State and Nation; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the Dionne Rumble VFW Post 7227 of
Carthage, New York; and

WHEREAS, The Dionne Rumble VFW Post 7227 was chartered on May 10,
1946, thanks to the efforts of World War I veteran Orville LaQuary and
World War II veteran Joseph Gondusky; and

WHEREAS, Orville and Joe wanted a VFW Post in Carthage and set out
to make it happen; meetings were held at the American Legion, the Odd
Fellow Hall and the Opera House; at each meeting, more and more veterans
seemed to be interested; and

WHEREAS, A petition was sent to the VFW National Headquarters and a
Charter containing 151 names was issued on May 10, 1946; and

WHEREAS, In an unbiased selection of names of veterans from the
towns of Wilna and Champion who were killed in World War II, the names
Joseph T. Dionne and Francis L. Rumble were chosen as the Post name;
and

WHEREAS, Shortly after the Post was instituted, the members voted to
add an Auxiliary; the ladies came together to clear their applications
to make sure the information and discharge papers were in order; a few
days later, officers were elected for the newly organized Auxiliary of
the Dionne Rumble Post 7227 and were installed in November of 1946; and

WHEREAS, On December 8, 1946, they were instituted by higher
officers at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Carthage, and received their
Charter; their meetings were held upstairs over Gaffney Sweet Shop until
March of 1949; and

WHEREAS, By June of 1947, they had three officers in County Council,
and by July of 1949, several ladies were going to the State Convention;
and

WHEREAS, From May of 1946 until April of 1949, the Post held their
meetings over Teator's Store, which today is the Carthage Savings and
Loan building; in March of that same year, together the Post members and
the ladies Auxiliary held a meeting regarding the purchasing of the
8-room dwelling at 668 West End Avenue; they decided to buy it and made
their first payment; at this time, they had approximately 185 post
members and 70 auxiliary members; and


WHEREAS, In August of 1976, ground was broken for a 40`x 60`
addition onto the back of the building; this addition housed a new
kitchen with a large meeting/banquet room; in the Spring of 1984,
another addition was started, measuring 30`x 96` on the East side of the
building; and

WHEREAS, A mortgage was taken out on November 30, 1951, for this
Post and was paid off; the "Mortgage Burning' was held on January 13,
1962; and

WHEREAS, Currently, under the exceptional leadership of Commander
Joseph Martel, the Dionne Rumble VFW Post 7227 has 296 comrades and the
auxiliary consists of 293 sisters; these men and women are always
available to support veterans and their families in times of need; they
are a symbol of military heritage, community and patriotism; and

WHEREAS, Mindful of its proud and honored history, the Dionne Rumble
VFW Post 7227 celebrates with just pride and true honor, its 75th
Anniversary of service to its community and the needs and values of
veterans across the State and Nation; and

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to commend the
devoted leadership of the Post's outstanding Commanders, both present
and past, and the absolute commitment of its many proud members, noting
the role played by this extraordinary organization and recognizing the
significance of the contributions and sacrifices of the membership of
the Dionne Rumble VFW Post 7227 of Carthage, New York; now, therefore,
be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the Dionne Rumble VFW Post 7227 of
Carthage, New York; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Commander Joseph Martel, Dionne Rumble VFW Post 7227,
Carthage, New York.
