MOURNING the tragic and untimely death of NYPD
Police Officer Anastasios Tsakos on Tuesday, April
27, 2021

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to convey its
grateful appreciation and heartfelt regret in recognition of the loss of
a courageous police officer who dedicated his purposeful life and career
in faithful service to his family and to the residents of New York City;
and

WHEREAS, It is with profound sadness that this Legislative Body
records the passing of NYPD Police Officer Anastasios Tsakos, who made
the ultimate sacrifice on Tuesday, April 27, 2021, while faithfully
executing his responsibilities, serving with dedication, loyalty and
compassion, and who devoted his purposeful life and career to serve and
protect; and

WHEREAS, Officer Anastasios Tsakos exemplified what it truly means
to give of himself in providing vital police services in keeping with
the noble mission of the New York City Police Department; and

WHEREAS, Officer Anastasios Tsakos, a 43-year-old resident of East
Northport, New York, died in the line of duty following a tragic
accident; and

WHEREAS, Early in the morning on Tuesday, April 27, 2021, Officer
Anastasios Tsakos was struck by a passing vehicle as he stood next to
his marked car while diverting traffic from a previous fatal crash on
the Long Island Expressway in Queens; he was rushed in critical
condition to New York-Presbyterian Queens Hospital, where he later
succumbed to his injuries; and

WHEREAS, Anastasios Tsakos was the son of immigrants from Laconia,
Greece; he grew up in Astoria, Queens, and was a graduate of St.
Demetrios High School; he moved to Greece for a short time and served in
the Greek military; and

WHEREAS, In January of 2007, Anastasios Tsakos joined the NYPD; upon
graduating from the NYPD Academy, he was assigned to the 75th Precinct
and the 83rd Precinct before being assigned to Highway 3; and

WHEREAS, Officer Anastasios Tsakos was a member of the St. Paul's
Society, the NYPD Fraternal organization for Police Officers of the
Eastern Orthodox Christian faith; and

WHEREAS, A 14-year veteran of the force and father of two small
children, Officer Anastasios Tsakos and his wife recently purchased a
home in East Northport; and

WHEREAS, Officer Anastasios Tsakos was affectionately known as
"Taso" to his neighbors; they knew him as a friendly, dedicated family
man and an extremely hard worker; he frequently came to the aid of his
neighbors when they were stricken with COVID-19 by bringing them food

and items needed from the supermarket; he even helped one put up
moulding; and

WHEREAS, Although he worked nights, Officer Anastasios Tsakos
enjoyed playing with his kids during the day; and

WHEREAS, Officer Anastasios Tsakos gave 14 years to the NYPD,
protecting its residents and making sure they stayed safe; he loved
being a police officer and was dedicated to his profession and was
well-respected by his fellow police officers who described him as "the
best of the best"; and

WHEREAS, Officer Anastasios Tsakos performed his duties with great
honor, integrity and pride; he was truly an exceptional role model and
inspiration to his fellow officers; at his funeral, NYPD Commissioner
Dermot Shea posthumously promoted him to first-grade detective; and

WHEREAS, Officer Anastasios Tsakos leaves behind his wife of seven
years, Irene Tsakos; his six-year-old daughter, Jenny;
three-and-a-half-year-old son, Stavros; older sister, Katina; and his
younger brother, Lefteris; and

WHEREAS, The New York City community and the entire State of New
York has lost a prominent officer, husband, father, brother, and friend;
he will be deeply missed and truly merits the grateful tribute of this
Legislative Body; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations in a
moment of silence in tribute to NYPD Police Officer Anastasios Tsakos,
whose unselfish concern for the welfare of others enhanced the lives of
those fortunate to have called him family, colleague and friend, and to
express its deepest condolences to his family; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the family of NYPD Police Officer Anastasios Tsakos.
