MEMORIALIZING Governor Kathy Hochul to proclaim
February 7-14, 2022, as Congenital Heart Disease
Awareness Week in the State of New York

WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to memorialize
Governor Kathy Hochul to proclaim February 7-14, 2022, as Congenital
Heart Disease Awareness Week in the State of New York, in conjunction
with the observance of February 14, 2022, as National Congenital Heart
Disease Awareness Day; and

WHEREAS, Adult Congenital Heart Association (ACHA) is the only
nonprofit in the country dedicated solely to the unique needs of the
nearly 2 million adults who were born with heart defects; and

WHEREAS, The Adult Congenital Heart Association empowers and
supports all those who were born with a heart defect, their loved ones,
and the medical community who cares for them in New York; and

WHEREAS, Congenital heart defect (CHD) is the most common birth
defect in the United States, with nearly 1 in 100 babies born each year
with CHD; and

WHEREAS, Advances and innovations in pediatric cardiology have
increased long-term survival of children born with CHD; and

WHEREAS, For more than a decade, the number of adults with CHD
exceeds the number of children with CHD and this number continues to
grow exponentially; and

WHEREAS, Congenital heart disease requires lifelong specialized
cardiac care; and

WHEREAS, The mission of ACHA is to empower the CHD community by
advancing access to resources and specialized care that improve
patient-centered outcomes; and

WHEREAS, Remaining true to its mission, Congenital Heart Disease
Awareness Week and Congenital Heart Disease Awareness Day honors and
celebrates New York residents with CHD and their contributions to our
community; and

WHEREAS, It is imperative that there be greater awareness of this
serious health condition, and more must be done to increase activity at
the local, State and National levels; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
memorialize Governor Kathy Hochul to proclaim February 7-14, 2022, as
Congenital Heart Disease Awareness Week in the State of New York; and be
it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to The Honorable Kathy Hochul, Governor of the State of New
York.
