COMMEMORATING the 200th Anniversary of the
Rochester Female Charitable Society on February 26,
2022
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body that the quality
and character of life in this great Empire State is greatly enriched by
the faithful and diligent work of those organizations which serve to
meet the needs of the community and its citizenry; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate the 200th Anniversary of the Rochester Female Charitable
Society to be celebrated on Saturday, February 26, 2022; and
WHEREAS, Rochester's oldest nonprofit organization and one of the
first in the United States, the Rochester Female Charitable Society was
established by 14 kind and compassionate women on February 26, 1822, for
the relief of indigent persons and families in cases of sickness and
suffering; and
WHEREAS, Throughout its history, the Rochester Female Charitable
Society has founded or been instrumental in establishing six social
service agencies which continue to operate today: Hillside Family of
Agencies (1837), Rochester Regional Health (1847), Friendly Senior
Living (1849), Rochester Childfirst Network (1857), UofR Medicine Care,
Visiting Nurse Service (1919), and Medical Motor Service of Rochester
and Monroe County (1919); and
WHEREAS, Today, the Rochester Female Charitable Society remains true
to its mission by distributing grants to nonprofit social welfare and
health related organizations providing services to low-income families;
and
WHEREAS, In the past 41 years, the Rochester Female Charitable
Society has awarded $2.2 million to local non profit agencies and $1.9
million to individual clients of those agencies; and
WHEREAS, The success of the Rochester Female Charitable Society is
in direct correlation to the efforts of its volunteer Board of Directors
and members, whose involvement is, and always has been, characterized by
an impressive commitment, an unbridled enthusiasm, and an uncompromising
standard of excellence in all endeavors on behalf of the institution and
the community it serves; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those
organizations which unselfishly devote their energy, talent and
thoughtful care on behalf of improving the quality and dignity of life
in the community, are worthy and due full praise and recognition for
their noble and dedicated efforts; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 200th Anniversary of the Rochester Female Charitable
Society on February 26, 2022; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the Rochester Female Charitable Society.
