COMMEMORATING the 35th Anniversary of the New York
Immigration Coalition

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize that
the quality and character of life in the communities across New York
State are reflective of the concerned and dedicated efforts of those
organizations and individuals who would devote themselves to the welfare
of the community and its citizenry; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate the 35th Anniversary of the New York Immigration Coalition
in 2022; and

WHEREAS, In 1987, the New York Immigration Coalition (NYIC) was
founded to address the needs of an increasing immigrant population in
New York City through the collaboration of many voices; and

WHEREAS, This vital organization tirelessly works to support
approximately 200 groups across New York City, uniting its multi-racial,
multi-ethnic and multi-sector members and supporting positive social and
political change; and

WHEREAS, The NYIC is committed to increasing civic participation in
the immigrant community, especially through voter registration and
policy advocacy at both the local and state levels; and

WHEREAS, The NYIC also serves as a community educator, producing
brochures and publishing information on health care services, and safe
and affordable housing; and

WHEREAS, The NYIC strives to break down barriers and stigmas
surrounding the immigrant community through outreach to the residents of
New York City and its policymakers; and

WHEREAS, In order to realize the dream of shared prosperity, the
NYIC fights for solutions that benefit all Americans and uphold the
dignity of all individuals, and serves to welcome and integrate
newcomers; and

WHEREAS, For 35 years, the NYIC has remained resolute in its mission
to promote immigrants' full civic participation, foster their
leadership, and provide a unified voice and a vehicle for collective
action for New York's diverse immigrant communities; and

WHEREAS, The NYIC has combined New York's immigrant communities and
the organizations which serve them to amplify the political demands of
immigrant New Yorkers and advance positive social change through the
establishment of five regional offices and an expanded focus to include
not just immigration law and policy, but some of the most important
issues that impact the lives of everyday New Yorkers, education, health
care, and civic engagement; and

WHEREAS, Through the COVID-19 pandemic, the NYIC raised significant
funds to provide direct cash assistance to more than 5,000 New Yorkers
excluded from the federal stimulus package, partnered with National
Coalition to include mixed-status families in federal pandemic relief
programs and secured free COVID-19 testing, evaluation, and treatment
for all low-income New Yorkers regardless of status; and

WHEREAS, The success of the NYIC is in direct correlation to the
efforts of its board of directors and staff, whose involvement is, and
always has been, characterized by an impressive commitment, an unbridled
enthusiasm, and an uncompromising standard of excellence in all
endeavors on behalf of the institution and the community it serves; and

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body that when
organizations of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our
attention, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens
of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 35th Anniversary of the New York Immigration Coalition;
and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the New York Immigration Coalition.
