MOURNING the death of Mayor Carl J. Eilenberg,
distinguished citizen and devoted member of his
community
WHEREAS, It is with great sorrow and deep regret that this
Legislative Body honors Mayor Carl J. Eilenberg, noting the significance
of his purposeful life and accomplishments; and
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
citizens of the State of New York whose lifework and civic endeavor
served to enhance the quality of life in their communities and this
great Empire State; and
WHEREAS, Mayor Carl J. Eilenberg of Rome, New York, died on July 10,
2023, at the age of 93; and
WHEREAS, A graduate of Syracuse University, Carl J. Eilenberg
started his career in sports broadcasting; he covered a vast number of
sports and was the public address announcer at the Carrier Dome at
Syracuse University from 1980 to 2005; and
WHEREAS, For nearly 30 years, Mayor Carl J. Eilenberg was known as
the "Voice of the Syracuse Orange"; he became a broadcaster in Rome, New
York, after moving there and making the city his home; and
WHEREAS, Known as "the people's mayor" and serving Rome for three
terms (1980-1992), becoming one of the city's longest-serving mayors,
Mayor Carl J. Eilenberg was known for his work and support for athletic
and veterans' programs and events; he was also quite involved with the
youth; and
WHEREAS, A man who was devoted to making his community a better
place to live, work, and play, Mayor Carl J. Eilenberg was known for his
fiscal responsibility as well as keeping Rome safe and affordable for
those who call the city home; and
WHEREAS, As the founder of the Roman Runners Club, Mayor Carl J.
Eilenberg was instrumental in starting the Rome Sports Hall of Fame into
which he was inducted in 2006; additionally, he aided in establishing
Honor America Days; and
WHEREAS, Mayor Carl J. Eilenberg is survived by his wife, Susan, and
his son, Peter; he is predeceased by his first wife, Norma; a son,
Robert; and a daughter, Carol; and
WHEREAS, Armed with a humanistic spirit and imbued with a sense of
compassion, Mayor Carl J. Eilenberg leaves behind a legacy which will
long endure the passage of time and will remain as a comforting memory
to all he served and befriended; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
mourn the death of Mayor Carl J. Eilenberg, distinguished citizen and
devoted member of his community, and to express its deepest condolences
to his family; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the family of Mayor Carl J. Eilenberg.
