CONGRATULATING Alice Mae Springer Goodson upon the
occasion of celebrating her 100th Birthday

WHEREAS, Senior citizens bring a wealth of experience and knowledge
to the increasingly active roles they play in today's society; their
past contributions and future participation are a vital part of, and
valuable asset to, the fabric of community life and activity; and

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to commemorate
and recognize certain milestones celebrated by citizens of this great
Empire State; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
congratulate Alice Mae Springer Goodson upon the occasion of her 100th
Birthday to be celebrated Sunday, March 24, 2024; and

WHEREAS, Born on March 24, 1924, to Floyd and Bettie Springer in
Moultrie, Georgia, Alice Mae Springer attended Moultrie High School for
Negro Youth where she, alongside her sister, Fannie, flourished,
especially on the basketball court; her dedication, skills, and success
within the sport led her team to win a Georgia state championship title;
and

WHEREAS, In 1956, after traveling north and living and working for a
period in Harlem, New York, Alice Mae Springer and her family moved to
Brooklyn; and

WHEREAS, During her time in Harlem, Alice Mae Springer held a
variety of jobs, including crafting sequins, styling hair, making sweet
potato turnovers, and caring for the children in the neighborhood, all
of which contributed to her repertoire of skills and abilities; and

WHEREAS, In 1957, Alice Mae Springer married her beloved husband,
Robert Lark Menden Goodson; the couple later moved to Franklin Avenue in
Brooklyn in 1974, the cherished home where they raised their children,
grandchildren, and great-grandchildren; and

WHEREAS, Alice Mae Springer Goodson was very active in her church
community, Washington Temple Church of God in Christ, where she served
as the "Mother" of the junior church, before being asked to serve as the
"Mother" of the whole church, an esteemed role of honor which she
faithfully and dedicatedly fulfills; and

WHEREAS, Alice Mae Springer Goodson, with her zest for life, has
inspired and enhanced the lives of her family and friends; and

WHEREAS, With her throughout have been her six children, Shirley,
Aaron, Theresa, Ricky, Lisa, and Renita, all of whom feel privileged to
be a part of her life and rejoice in her many achievements; and

WHEREAS, This exceptional centenarian has experienced the incredible
joys and sorrows characteristic of and reserved for those with the
stamina and courage to savor a full life; and

WHEREAS, Alice Mae Springer Goodson has enriched the lives of those
around her through her joyous and sincere love for others and through
the profound charm and wisdom which comes only from a fullness of years;
and

WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to publicly
recognize those who have reached such a remarkable age and who have
witnessed and celebrated the innovations, cultural developments, and
magnificent achievements of this country during the last century, while
themselves contributing to the growth and excellence of this great
Empire State; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
congratulate Alice Mae Springer Goodson upon the occasion of celebrating
her 100th Birthday; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted Alice Mae Springer Goodson.
