HONORING Carolyn McBain upon the occasion of her
designation for special recognition by the New York
State Office for the Aging on May 14, 2024
WHEREAS, Senior citizens bring a wealth of experience and knowledge
to the increasingly active roles they play in today's society; their
past contributions and future participation are a vital part of, and
valuable asset to, the fabric of community life and activity; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Carolyn
McBain upon the occasion of her designation for special recognition by
the New York State Office for the Aging on Tuesday, May 14, 2024, at The
Egg Performing Arts Theater at the Empire State Plaza; and
WHEREAS, Each May, the New York State Office for the Aging pauses to
acknowledge the outstanding contributions made by older citizens during
National Older Americans Month; and
WHEREAS, Members of older generations have helped build and shape
our Nation to be the greatest in the world; they have defended our
freedoms and values to ensure that those who come after them may have
better lives; nowhere in the Nation is the legacy of their efforts more
visible and more a part of the lives of all citizens than here in the
State of New York; and
WHEREAS, Carolyn McBain has continually demonstrated extreme
competence, extraordinary intelligence, and diligent leadership in her
unwavering service to her community and, consequently, has been selected
for this most prestigious honor; and
WHEREAS, Born on August 28, 1933, in Savannah, Georgia, Carolyn
McBain attended Georgia State University and graduated in 1950; she
later attended New York University (NYU) in New York City where she
received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education in 1961;
additionally, she attended Fordham University Graduate School of Social
Work in 1967; and
WHEREAS, Carolyn McBain taught in various high schools in Georgia
before she moved to New York City and became first employed with the New
York University School of Pathology; upon moving north to the state
where she has since resided, Carolyn McBain married her husband, Lucas
McBain, in 1965; and
WHEREAS, Holding a myriad of careers throughout her
experience-filled life, Carolyn McBain later worked with the Social
Service Bureau of Child Welfare in the Bronx from 1971 to 1976; she then
became a counselor with the New York City Board of Education District
75; she also was an adjunct teacher and counselor at Fordham and Borough
of Manhattan Community Colleges, and was employed by the City of New
York for 32 years before her retirement in 1998; and
WHEREAS, Ever active in her community, Carolyn McBain wrote programs
for the Alloysius Church Youth Committee in Central Harlem and the
Tremont section in the Bronx; she also has developed a program to
introduce college students to live Broadway shows, assisted with the
seminars at Hunter College and local churches concerning foot care, eye
care and hearing aids, coordinated shredding events for seniors in her
community with AARP, and currently coordinates the Digital Workshops for
Seniors at Kennedy Senior Center and A. Phillip Randolph Senior Center;
and
WHEREAS, Furthermore, Carolyn McBain offers grief and health
referrals for seniors in need, assists the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority,
Inc. Northern Manhattan Alumni Chapter with present and future
programs, is an alternative delegate from the Tioga Democratic Club
District 10 and is a member of various local political clubs; and
WHEREAS, Carolyn McBain is also the founder of Citywide Mental
Health for Black Elders, Inc. and assisted with the organization of the
Community Board No. 10 Senior Task Force and represents local seniors at
the meetings; and
WHEREAS, Devout in her faith, Carolyn McBain is a member of the
Parish Council at Saint Charles Borromeo Church and is active in the
Rosary Society and Lazarus Project; and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by
individuals for the benefit of others which Carolyn McBain has displayed
throughout her life; and
WHEREAS, Carolyn McBain has enriched the lives of her family,
friends and colleagues through her love and respect for others, and
through the wisdom which comes from many years of living life to the
fullest; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Carolyn McBain upon the occasion of her designation for special
recognition by the New York State Office for the Aging; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Carolyn McBain.
