PAYING tribute to the 1956-58 State Championship
Cross Country Teams upon the occasion of being
honored as part of a special Legacy Tribute during
the 26th Annual Schenectady City School District
Athletic Hall of Fame and Reunion Dinner on
September 16, 2024

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and
pay tribute to those outstanding athletes who inspired and brought pride
to their school and community through outstanding achievements in
competition, attaining unprecedented success and the highest level of
personal achievement; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to pay
tribute to the 1956-58 State Championship Cross Country Teams upon the
occasion of being honored as part of a special Legacy Tribute during the
26th Annual Schenectady City School District Athletic Hall of Fame and
Reunion Dinner on Monday, September 16, 2024, at the Event Center at
Rivers Casino & Resort in Schenectady, New York; and

WHEREAS, Excellence and success in competitive sports can be
achieved only through strenuous practice, teamwork, and team spirit,
nurtured by dedicated coaching and strategic planning; and

WHEREAS, Athletic competition enhances the moral and physical
development of the youth of this State, preparing them for the future by
instilling in them the value of teamwork, encouraging a standard of
healthy living, imparting a desire for success, and developing a sense
of fair play and competition; and

WHEREAS, Coached by Schenectady Hall of Famer Bill Leonard, Nott
Terrace High School won State titles in both 1956 and 1957, and Mont
Pleasant High under the leadership of another Schenectady Athletic Hall
of Fame member Ray Vacca School won the state crown in 1958; and

WHEREAS, The 1956 Nott Terrace team won the Proctor Invitational and
finished second in the NYU Interscholastic Run prior to winning its
season State title at Baldwinsville; and

WHEREAS, The 1957 Nott Terrace cross-country team once again won the
Proctor Invitational and finished second at the Grout Run (behind city
rival Mont Pleasant), and finished 2nd at the St. John's Run & 3rd in
the NYU Run, and concluded its season by winning a second consecutive
State title on Long Island; and

WHEREAS, The 1958 Mont Pleasant cross-country team took the Proctor
Run, Grout Run, and New York University Interscholastic Cross-Country
Meet prior to winning their State cross-country meet at Colgate; and

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body that when
individuals and teams of such outstanding athletic accomplishments are

brought to our attention, they should be recognized by all the citizens
of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
congratulate the 1956 and 1957 Nott Terrace Cross-Country Team members:
Paul Landofo, Jason Nogee, John O'Sullivan, Peter Runge, Pete Schuyler,
Phil Spencer, Ray Westendo, John Abele, Mike Cotton, Tom Finnigan, Dan
Hackett, James Lloyd, Francis Mills and Mark Youmans; and 1958 Mont
Pleasant Cross-Country Team members: Tom Farry, Joe Hartley, Ron Horan,
Mike Keigher, Bob Lewkowicz, Bob Potter and Jim Scott on their sustained
excellence and overall team record; and be it further

RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the members and coaches of the 1956-58 State Championship
Cross Country Teams.
