HONORING Dr. Debra Boutin upon the occasion of her
retirement after 25 years of distinguished service
to Hamilton College

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to acknowledge the
significant milestones in the distinguished careers of esteemed
residents of this noble Empire State; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Dr. Debra Boutin upon the occasion of her retirement after 25 years of
distinguished service to Hamilton College; and

WHEREAS, For the past 25 years, Dr. Debra Boutin rendered faithful,
conscientious, and valuable service to Hamilton College, earning the
admiration, esteem, and affection of her colleagues; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Debra Boutin received her A.S. degree from Springfield
Technical Community College, her A.B. degree from Smith College, and
earned her Ph.D. from Cornell University; and

WHEREAS, Joining Hamilton College as faculty in 1999, Dr. Debra
Boutin has had the esteemed opportunity to serve in various capacities
with the college, including as chair of the Campus Planning Committee,
member of the Academic Council, member of the Committee on Academic
Policy, Treasurer of Faculty for Women's Concerns, and member of the
Harassment and Sexual Misconduct Board; and

WHEREAS, Throughout her tenure, Dr. Debra Boutin has proven her
dedication to service, commitment to academic excellence, and caring
concern for her students, and justly has received various awards,
accolades, and distinctions, such as the Dean's Scholarly Achievement
Award for Early Career Achievement; designation as a Project NExT
Fellow; an Honorable Mention by the Association for Women in
Mathematics, Alice T. Schafer Mathematics Prize; and participated in the
National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship by the
Office of Naval Research; and

WHEREAS, In her capacity as a professor, Dr. Debra Boutin served
with loyalty, honor and distinction, and was governed by a keen sense of
duty and always showed a unique grasp of human problems in his official
acts; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Debra Boutin's mathematical interests include graph
theory, geometric graph theory, and group theory; in particular, she
works with graphs, their drawings, and their symmetry groups; and

WHEREAS, Some of the recent courses Dr. Debra Boutin has taught
include Linear Algebra, Combinatorics, Modern Algebra, and Graph
Symmetries; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Debra Boutin's recent papers include "Geometric Graph
Homomorphisms" with Sally Cockburn in the Journal of Graph Theory, which

is forthcoming; they also include "Thickness and Chromatic Number of
r-Inflated Graphs" with Michael O. Albertson and Ellen Gethner in
Discrete Math, which is forthcoming, and "Determining sets, resolving
sets, and the exchange property" in Graphs and Combinatorics 2009; and

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when
individuals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our
attention, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens
of the great State of New York; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Dr. Debra Boutin upon the occasion of her retirement after 25
years of distinguished service to Hamilton College, and to wish her
great success in all her future endeavors; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Dr. Debra Boutin.
