COMMEMORATING the 60th Anniversary of the Rye
Historical Society

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body, in keeping with
its time-honored traditions, to recognize and pay tribute to those
organizations that embrace the historical significance and contributions
of their localities which strengthen the fabric of the communities of
New York State; and

WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to commemorate the
60th Anniversary of the Rye Historical Society to be celebrated at the
Shenorock Shore Club in Rye, New York, on Friday, June 14, 2024; and

WHEREAS, During this celebration, Susan Morison, former Executive
Director of the Rye Historical Society, long-time volunteer, and Member
of its Board of Trustees, will be the honored guest; and

WHEREAS, In 1964, the Rye Historical Society was founded by a group
of concerned citizens who shared the inclination to preserve, restore,
and protect the Square House, an 18th-century inn on the Village Green
in Rye, New York; and

WHEREAS, Since the restoration was completed, the Rye Historical
Society has maintained the Square House as a museum; in 1980, the
Society received accreditation from the American Alliance of Museums;
and

WHEREAS, In 1992, the Rye Historical Society acquired and restored
the Timothy Knapp House, Westchester County's oldest house, opening it
to the public in 2001; utilizing it as an archival and research center
is the purpose of the historic treasure; and

WHEREAS, A non-profit organization devoted to researching,
preserving, and celebrating the unique heritage of Rye, New York, the
Rye Historical Society continues to maintain its purpose; and

WHEREAS, The Charter from the New York State Department of Education
states the Rye Historical Society's mission: to bring together people
interested in the history of the area; to discover, collect, and
preserve materials which help to establish or illustrate the history of
the area; to provide for the preservation of historic buildings,
monuments, and markers; and to disseminate a knowledge of local history
and to foster a public awareness of, and pride in, the historic heritage
of the Rye community; and

WHEREAS, Today, the Rye Historical Society serves the residents of
the Rye, New York, area through school visits and programs, vacation and
summer camp programs, lectures, exhibits, walking tours, and numerous
family and community events throughout the year; and

WHEREAS, The success of the Rye Historical Society is in direct
correlation to the efforts of its members, whose involvement is, and
always has been, characterized by an impressive commitment, an unbridled

enthusiasm, and an uncompromising standard of excellence in all
endeavors; and

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that, when
individuals and organizations of such noble aims and accomplishments are
brought to our attention, they should be celebrated and recognized by
all the citizens of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 60th Anniversary of the Rye Historical Society and to
honor its members, past and present, who have labored so conscientiously
to secure and improve the quality of life for the citizens of the
community; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the Rye Historical Society.
