COMMEMORATING the 200th Anniversary of the
Wethersfield Stone Schoolhouse on June 8, 2025
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and
commemorate the important milestones of historical places within the
State of New York, and in doing so, help to ensure that the complete
history of our State and Nation is preserved and shared with present
generations of citizens; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate the 200th Anniversary of the Wethersfield Stone Schoolhouse;
this auspicious occasion will be celebrated at an informative open house
at the Wethersfield Stone Schoolhouse in Holland Patent, New York, on
Sunday, June 8, 2025; and
WHEREAS, In 1825, the Wethersfield Stone Schoolhouse was constructed
with stone from a quarry within walking distance from the school; and
WHEREAS, After its construction, the Wethersfield Stone Schoolhouse
was designated as the District No. 6 schoolhouse, and the building
functioned as a school until 1934, when the Holland Patent school system
was centralized; and
WHEREAS, After the Wethersfield Stone Schoolhouse closed, it quickly
suffered from considerable deterioration due to a lack of proper
maintenance and care; and
WHEREAS, In the early 1990s, a group of local residents became
concerned over the condition of the Wethersfield Stone Schoolhouse, and
together they created the Wethersfield Historic Preservation Society;
and
WHEREAS, With a desire to save this historic landmark, the
Wethersfield Stone Schoolhouse was officially purchased by the
Wethersfield Historic Preservation Society in 1996, which marked the
beginning of a thorough restoration project funded by grants and
donations; by 2005, the restoration project was complete; and
WHEREAS, In 2005, the same year the restoration project was
completed, the Wethersfield Stone Schoolhouse was listed on the National
Register of Historic Places--the Nation's official prestigious list of
properties worth preservation; and
WHEREAS, The Wethersfield Stone Schoolhouse is currently one of the
oldest landmarks in Oneida County, and it is one of the oldest stone
schoolhouses still standing in New York State; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is pleased to have this opportunity
to express its highest admiration for the Wethersfield Stone
Schoolhouse, and for all the individuals who have worked to bring proper
care and attention to a place which merits recognition in the history of
our State and Nation; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 200th Anniversary of the Wethersfield Stone Schoolhouse,
to be celebrated on June 8, 2025; and be it further
RESOLVED, That this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be transmitted
to the Wethersfield Stone Schoolhouse.
