Senate Resolution No. 1128

CONGRATULATING Marianno Sarro upon the occasion of
celebrating his 100th Birthday
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to commemorate
and recognize certain milestones celebrated by citizens of this great
Empire State; and
WHEREAS, Senior citizens bring a wealth of experience and knowledge
to the increasingly active roles they play in today's society; their
past contributions and future participation are a vital part of, and
valuable asset to, the fabric of community life and activity; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
congratulate Marianno Sarro upon the occasion of his 100th Birthday,
celebrated on Saturday, May 24, 2025; and
WHEREAS, Marianno Sarro, affectionately known as "Mud" by all who
knew him, was born a century ago on May 24, 1925 to Louis and Crucifisa
Sarro in Oyster Bay, New York where he grew up and attended Oyster Bay
High School with his three brothers and three sisters; and
WHEREAS, Showing an affinity for music, Marianno Sarro found a
particular talent and passion for playing the drums; and
WHEREAS, After his graduation from high school, Marianno Sarro was
drafted into the military, and proudly served three years in the Navy
where he was later stationed in Guam; and
WHEREAS, Upon his return from his service, Marianno Sarro's father
bought him a set of drums and his passion for music grew with his talent
for the drums; wanting to follow his growing love for music he attended
Hartnett Music School in Manhattan where he studied piano and
percussion; and
WHEREAS, While attending music school, Marianno Sarro met the love
of his life Catherine (Kate) Yannucci; and
WHEREAS, Marianno and Kate Sarro married on February 9, 1946 and
remained in Oyster Bay where he worked for Sunset Meat Market, a
long-standing butcher shop owned by his dad that served the local
community; and
WHEREAS, The couple started their family in Oyster Bay having two
sons, Louis and Ronald and then, in 1955, they moved to Bethpage, New
York where, in 1956 and 1963, they were blessed with two more sons, Gary
and James, respectively; and
WHEREAS, With a growing family to support, Marianno Sarro worked
many years for the Long Island Lighting Company and Northrop Grumman,
and retired from the Nassau County Highway Department in 1990; and
WHEREAS, Throughout his working life, Marianno Sarro continued to
play the drums professionally on the weekends while giving drum lessons
at night during the week as a secondary source of income; one of his
students eventually became the long-standing drummer for the well-known
1960's pop group called "The Brooklyn Bridge"; and
WHEREAS, Marianno Sarro, with his zest for life, has inspired and
enhanced the lives of his family and friends; and
WHEREAS, Following in their father's footsteps, Marianno Sarro's
four sons learned to play the drums, two of whom earned music degrees
and also played professionally; and
WHEREAS, This exceptional centenarian has experienced the incredible
joys and sorrows characteristic of and reserved for those with the
stamina and courage to savor a full life; and
WHEREAS, Filled with an incredible sense of love and devotion,
Marianno Sarro remained by the side of his beloved wife throughout their
70-year marriage, caring for her until she passed in 2016; and
WHEREAS, In addition to being a wonderful father to his four boys,
Marianno Sarro is a doting grandfather to his six cherished
grandchildren and great grandfather to his nine beloved great
grandchildren; and
WHEREAS, Marianno Sarro's undying love for his family, healthy
lifestyle, and razor sharp humor undoubtedly keeps him young at heart
and contributes to his longevity; and
WHEREAS, Marianno Sarro has enriched the lives of those around him
through his joyous and sincere love for others and through the profound
charm and wisdom which comes only from a fullness of years; and
WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to publicly
recognize those who have reached such a remarkable age and who have
witnessed and celebrated the innovations, cultural developments and
awesome achievements of this country during the last century, while
themselves contributing to the growth and excellence of this great
Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
congratulate Marianno Sarro upon the occasion of celebrating his 100th
Birthday; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Marianno Sarro.
