COMMENDING John J. Ivers posthumously upon the
occasion of his designation as recipient of a
Liberty Medal, the highest honor bestowed upon an
individual by the New York State Senate

WHEREAS, Members of the Armed Services from the State of New York,
who have served so valiantly and honorably in wars in which this
country's freedom was at stake, as well as in the preservation of peace
in peace- time, deserve a special salute from this esteemed Body; and

WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to commend John J.
Ivers posthumously upon the occasion of his designation as recipient of
a Liberty Medal, the highest honor bestowed upon an individual by the
New York State Senate; the Saratoga County Veterans Service Agency will
be honoring John J. Ivers on Tuesday, June 17, 2025 at the Honor our
Deceased Veterans Ceremony to be held at the County Office Building in
Ballston Spa, New York; and

WHEREAS, The New York State Senate Liberty Medal was established by
Resolution and is awarded to individuals who have merited special
commendation for exceptional, heroic, or humanitarian acts on behalf of
their fellow New Yorkers; and

WHEREAS, Born on November 9, 1927, John "Jack" Ivers was raised in
Ballston Spa, New York by his parents James and Helen Ivers; and

WHEREAS, After attending schools in Ballston Spa, John J. Ivers
worked at the American Locomotive Company for six months before entering
into military service; and

WHEREAS, John J. Ivers first entered into the United States Navy on
December 1, 1944 where he served as a Radioman onboard the USS Lake
Champlain until being discharged on July 14, 1946 at the rank of Petty
Officer 3rd Class; and

WHEREAS, For his courageous service in the Navy, John J. Ivers
received the American Campaign Medal, the European African Middle
Eastern Campaign Medal, and the WWII Victory Medal; and

WHEREAS, On January 12, 1948, John J. Ivers re-entered service into
the United States Marine Corps where he once again served as a Radio
Operator assigned to a Marine Corps Infantry Company; and

WHEREAS, John J. Ivers was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in
action against the enemy in defending his command post while under
attack; in addition to the Silver Star, for his service in the USMC, he
received the Presidential Unit Citation with 1 bronze star, the Korean
Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal and the United Nations Medal; and

WHEREAS, John J. Ivers was discharged on January 11, 1952 at the
rank of Sergeant; and

WHEREAS, In 1956, John J. Ivers married his beloved wife Veronica
and together they raised three cherished sons Shane, Brian, and Scott;
and

WHEREAS, John J. Ivers utilized his skills and experience at General
Electric where he worked diligently for 26 years until retiring in 1993;
and

WHEREAS, John J. Ivers died on April 29, 2010, at the age of 82; and

WHEREAS, Residents of this great State must never forget the courage
with which these men and women served their country, and must recognize
that no greater debt is owed than that owed to those who gave their
lives for their beloved Nation and to those who continue to be missing
in action; and

WHEREAS, Having exhibited his patriotism both at home and abroad,
John J. Ivers demonstrated his love for his country and merits
forevermore the highest respect of his State and Nation; and

WHEREAS, Our Nation's veterans deserve to be recognized, commended
and thanked by the people of the State of New York for their service and
for their dedication to their communities, their State and their Nation;
now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend John J. Ivers posthumously upon the occasion of his designation
as recipient of a Liberty Medal, the highest honor bestowed upon an
individual by the New York State Senate; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the family of John J. Ivers.
