MEMORIALIZING Governor Kathy Hochul to proclaim
March 2026 as Kidney Month in the State of New York

WHEREAS, Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is an under-recognized public
health crisis; it is the progressive, gradual loss of kidney function
which results in the decreased ability of the kidneys to remove waste
from the body; and

WHEREAS, CKD affects more than one in seven adults in the United
States, an estimated 35.5 million people; more than 2,220,000 adults in
New York State are affected by CKD, and approximately 266,000 are aware
of it; and

WHEREAS, As many as nine out of 10 people with CKD do not know they
have the disease because it usually has no symptoms until the later
stages; and

WHEREAS, CKD in New York State has increased from 2.5% in 2019 to
3.7% in 2024; and

WHEREAS, Less than 13% of people with CKD risk factors are tested
appropriately; and

WHEREAS, More than 50,0000 people have end-stage renal disease in
New York State, and data shows 7,695 of those individuals have been
waiting for lifesaving kidney transplants; and

WHEREAS, Regular screening for and early detection of CKD allow
opportunity for disease management that can slow the progression of
kidney disease and help prevent kidney failure; and

WHEREAS, The month of March is designated as National Kidney Month,
and March 12th is recognized as World Kidney Day to raise awareness of
kidney disease and the importance of prevention and early detection;
now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, This Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
memorialize Governor Kathy Hochul to proclaim March 2026 as Kidney Month
in the State of New York; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to The Honorable Kathy Hochul, Governor of the State of New
York.
