CELEBRATING Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day on
November 14, 2025, in recognition of Ruby Bridges'
historic contributions to the Civil Rights Movement
and her enduring legacy in promoting equity,
courage, and education for all

WHEREAS, On November 14, 1960, Ruby Bridges, at the age of six,
became the first African American student to integrate an all-white
elementary school in the South, bravely walking to William Frantz
Elementary School in New Orleans, Louisiana, amid hostile opposition and
threats; and

WHEREAS, Ruby Bridges' act of courage, supported by her family and
community, became a pivotal moment in the Civil Rights Movement,
symbolizing the determination to secure educational opportunities and
equality for all children, regardless of race; and

WHEREAS, Ruby Bridges' legacy reminds us of the profound importance
of ensuring access to quality education and fostering environments where
diversity, inclusion, and justice prevail; and

WHEREAS, Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day serves as an annual
observance, encouraging students, educators, families, and communities
to reflect on the values of perseverance, bravery, and the ongoing
pursuit of racial equity and social justice; and

WHEREAS, This observance provides an opportunity to honor Ruby
Bridges and to inspire future generations to stand against
discrimination, promote kindness, and work toward a more equitable
society; and

WHEREAS, Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day underscores the role of
education in shaping the minds and hearts of young people, cultivating
empathy, and empowering them to advocate for positive change in their
schools and communities; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
celebrate Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day on November 14, 2025, in
recognition of Ruby Bridges' historic contributions to the Civil Rights
Movement and her enduring legacy in promoting equity, courage, and
education for all, and to encourage schools, organizations, and
individuals to participate in activities that honor Ruby Bridges'
courage and commitment to civil rights and equality; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Ruby Bridges and organizations dedicated to educational
equity and civil rights as a symbol of our collective appreciation and
commitment to her enduring vision.
