HONORING Ernest Houghton posthumously upon the
occasion of his induction into the Schenectady City
School District Athletic Hall of Fame for his
achievements in basketball, baseball, and football
at Union College in Schenectady, New York
WHEREAS, Excellence and success in competitive sports can be
achieved only through strenuous practice, team play and team spirit,
nurtured by dedicated coaching and strategic planning; and
WHEREAS, Athletic competition enhances the moral and physical
development of the young people of this State, preparing them for the
future by instilling in them the value of teamwork, encouraging a
standard of healthy living, imparting a desire for success and
developing a sense of fair play and competition; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and
pay tribute to those outstanding athletes who inspired and brought pride
to their school and community by achieving outstanding success in
competition, attaining unprecedented success and the highest level of
personal achievement; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Ernest Houghton posthumously upon the occasion of his of his induction
into the Schenectady City School District Athletic Hall of Fame at its
2026 Schenectady City School District Athletic Hall of Fame & Reunion
Dinner on Monday, September 14, 2026, at the Event Center at Rivers
Casino & Resort, Schenectady, New York; and
WHEREAS, During the 1914 season, Earnest Houghton led Union College
to a 11-3 record, which he then followed up with a 13-1 campaign in
1915, and in both years the college won Northeastern Intercollegiate
League championships; and
WHEREAS, In 1914 and 1915, Ernest Houghton was selected to be a
basketball All-American, and was additionally the 1915 Helms Foundation
College Basketball Player of the Year, putting his name up alongside
players from major programs such as Wisconsin, Syracuse, and Purdue; and
WHEREAS, Following his collegiate basketball career, Ernest Houghton
played for Hudson in the New York State League, one of the first
established pro basketball leagues in the nation; and
WHEREAS, In 1914, Ernest Haughton started at quarterback and led
Union College football to their first undefeated season in program
history; and
WHEREAS, Ernest Haughton spent all four years playing collegiate
baseball, where he was described to be a hard-hitting first baseman; and
WHEREAS, Following Ernest Haughton's playing career, he went on to
become a basketball and football coach at The Albany Academy, continuing
to pass on the gift which he was provided; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Ernest Haughton posthumously upon the occasion of his induction
into the Schenectady City School District Athletic Hall of Fame on
September 14, 2026; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the family of Ernest Haughton.
