COMMENDING Natechia Campbell-Moss and Jovani Moss
upon the occasion of their designation as recipients
of a Liberty Medal, the highest honor bestowed upon
an individual by the New York State Senate
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize and
pay tribute to those extraordinary individuals whose courage,
selflessness, and commitment to the well-being of others exemplify the
highest ideals of citizenship and bring great credit to the State of New
York; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commend Natechia Campbell-Moss and Jovani Moss upon the occasion of
their designation as recipients of a Liberty Medal, the highest honor
bestowed upon an individual by the New York State Senate; and
WHEREAS, The New York State Senate Liberty Medal was established by
Resolution and is awarded to individuals who have merited special
commendation for exceptional, heroic, or humanitarian acts on behalf of
their fellow New Yorkers; and
WHEREAS, On the morning of March 31, 2026, at approximately 6:30
a.m., what began as an ordinary day quickly became a life-threatening
emergency when 15-year-old Jovani Moss, while leaving his home to wait
for the school bus, observed that a neighbor's home across the street
was engulfed in flames, with fire emerging from the roof; and
WHEREAS, Displaying extraordinary composure and maturity beyond his
years, Jovani immediately contacted his mother, Natechia Campbell-Moss,
to alert her to the danger and ask whether he should assist; following
her instructions, he promptly called 911, calmly relayed critical
information to emergency dispatchers, and remained on the line
throughout the incident, providing continuous updates that aided first
responders in their emergency response; and
WHEREAS, Without hesitation and with complete disregard for her own
personal safety, Natechia Campbell-Moss rushed from her home and
attempted to alert her neighbor by pounding on the door, ringing the
doorbell, and knocking on windows; when there was no response, she
forcefully kicked in the front door until it opened, enabling her to
reach the homeowner, who was disoriented and unaware that her residence
was rapidly filling with smoke; and
WHEREAS, Natechia Campbell-Moss immediately informed her neighbor
that the house was on fire and safely escorted her from the residence;
when the distraught homeowner re-entered the burning home in an attempt
to rescue her beloved cat, Natechia again courageously entered the
smoke-filled dwelling in an effort to save both her neighbor and the
family pet; through providence and determination, both women emerged
safely, although the cat tragically could not be found; and
WHEREAS, Throughout the emergency, Jovani Moss refused to board his
school bus until he knew that his mother and neighbor were safe and that
emergency personnel had arrived; remaining calm and steadfast, he
continued speaking with 911 dispatchers, provided valuable information
to more than 50 responding firefighters and members of the Suffolk
County Police Department, and assisted first responders by answering
questions necessary for their emergency response and official reports;
and
WHEREAS, Even after arriving at school, Jovani's first concern
remained the welfare of his neighbor, demonstrating remarkable
compassion, empathy, and concern for others; and
WHEREAS, The swift actions, extraordinary bravery, and unwavering
presence of mind demonstrated by Natechia Campbell-Moss and Jovani Moss
undoubtedly saved a life and stand as a powerful reminder of the
profound difference ordinary citizens can make through courage,
compassion, and decisive action in moments of crisis; and
WHEREAS, Beyond this heroic act, Jovani Moss has distinguished
himself as an exemplary young man, maintaining honor roll status at Half
Hollow Hills High School East and earning recognition as Student of the
Month through his academic excellence, leadership, and exemplary
character; and
WHEREAS, A dedicated student-athlete, Jovani participates in
football and track, where he consistently demonstrates discipline,
resilience, perseverance, and teamwork; grounded in his faith and
recently baptized, he aspires to inspire other young people through
positive leadership and is preparing to launch a clothing line dedicated
to encouraging confidence, self-expression, and purposeful living among
his peers; and
WHEREAS, Natechia Campbell-Moss is a devoted wife of 22 years to
Kevin Moss and the proud mother of Jovani Moss and Malakye Moss, a
student at SUNY Brockport; throughout her life she has exemplified
compassion, service, and an unwavering commitment to strengthening
families and communities; and
WHEREAS, As a Patient Services Representative with Mount Sinai
Doctors, Natechia Campbell-Moss has earned repeated recognition for her
empathy, creativity, and steadfast dedication to providing exceptional
care and support to patients; previously, as a Case Manager serving
individuals living with HIV/AIDS, she compassionately assisted clients
in securing medical care, health insurance, and essential resources
necessary for their health and well-being; and
WHEREAS, In addition to her healthcare service, Natechia
Campbell-Moss serves as a Fintech Business Consultant, empowering
individuals in underserved communities to achieve financial stability
through access to credit, capital, and entrepreneurial opportunities;
she is also the owner of Techia's Cake World, where her creativity and
entrepreneurial spirit bring joy to countless families celebrating
life's special moments; and
WHEREAS, Guided by a deep belief in the importance of community,
Natechia Campbell-Moss has long championed the idea that neighbors
should care for one another as though they were family, and her actions
on March 31, 2026, transformed those words into an inspiring example of
selfless heroism; and
WHEREAS, The courage, integrity, compassion, and civic
responsibility demonstrated by Natechia Campbell-Moss and Jovani Moss
reflect the very highest ideals of public service and represent an
enduring source of inspiration to the people of the State of New York;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Natechia Campbell-Moss and Jovani Moss upon the occasion of
their designation as recipients of the New York State Senate Liberty
Medal, the highest honor bestowed upon an individual by the New York
State Senate, and to extend to them its highest esteem, sincere
admiration, and best wishes for continued success in all of their future
endeavors; and be it further
RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Natechia Campbell-Moss and Jovani Moss.
