CELEBRATING the 100th Anniversary of the birth of
Shirley Chisholm, a transformational leader whose
legacy of courage, equity, and advocacy continues to
shape the nation
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and
pay tribute to those individuals and organizations that exemplify
visionary leadership, inspire progress, and make enduring contributions
to their communities and the broader society; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to join
in celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the birth of Shirley Chisholm, a
transformational leader whose legacy of courage, equity, and advocacy
continues to shape the nation; and
WHEREAS, Shirley Chisholm was a pioneering political figure,
educator, and activist, as well as a staunch supporter of civil rights,
poverty alleviation, and anti-war policies, often standing firm on
principles even when they were not politically popular; her legacy as a
fearless advocate for equity continues to influence activism and
politics today; and
WHEREAS, Shirley Chisholm, born on November 30, 1924, broke barriers
as the first Black woman elected to the United States Congress in 1968
and as the first African American and woman to seek the presidential
nomination of a major political party in 1972, exemplifying an
unwavering commitment to justice, opportunity, and representation for
all; and
WHEREAS, Throughout her trailblazing career, Shirley Chisholm
embodied her iconic motto, "Unbought and Unbossed," serving as a fierce
advocate for racial equality, women's rights, education, and economic
justice, and inspiring generations to engage in public service and civic
action; and
WHEREAS, The centennial of Shirley Chisholm's birth is a landmark
occasion that offers a profound opportunity to reflect on her
groundbreaking achievements, reaffirm the values she championed, and
rededicate ourselves to the work of creating a more inclusive and
equitable society; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is deeply moved to honor the legacy
of Shirley Chisholm, whose enduring influence serves as a beacon of
hope, progress, and empowerment for all, and to commend those whose
invaluable contributions keep her spirit and vision alive; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the birth of Shirley Chisholm, a
transformational leader whose legacy of courage, equity, and advocacy
continues to shape the nation.
