HONORING Nancy and Jerome Federlein upon the
occasion of their designation for special
recognition by the Community Chest of Port
Washington on March 31, 2025

WHEREAS, Individuals who give of their time and energies and serve
the best interests of their communities are assets beyond remuneration
and cannot be sufficiently extolled; and

WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Nancy and
Jerome Federlein, upon the occasion of their designation for special
recognition by the Community Chest of Port Washington, to be recognized
at its Awards Ceremony at the Public Library in Port Washington, New
York, on Monday, March 31, 2025; and

WHEREAS, Annually, since 1969, the Community Chest of Port
Washington has chosen an extraordinary resident, residents, or
organization as its Citizen of the Year; this award honors a lifetime of
outstanding volunteer service to the Port Washington, New York,
community; and

WHEREAS, This year, it is a privilege to recognize Nancy and Jerome
Federlein as the 49th Citizens of the Year, honoring them for a lifetime
of outstanding volunteer service; and

WHEREAS, Nancy Smith was born in Alexandria, Egypt, where her
mother's family lived and her father was stationed in the Royal Navy
during World War II; her family moved to Bolton, England, at the end of
the war; she graduated from the University of Bradford with a Bachelor
of Science in Chemistry; and

WHEREAS, Throughout high school and college, Nancy Smith
participated and volunteered in various extracurricular activities; she
was accepted into the Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO), the equivalent
to the Peace Corps, after college and was based in Nsukka, Nigeria, as a
science teacher for a year; and

WHEREAS, Jerome Federlein was born in Bronx, New York, and was
raised there and in Bayside, Queens; he graduated from the University of
Delaware and joined the United States Peace Corps in 1965, serving as
Agricultural and Rural Development Officer for the Eastern Nigerian
government; and

WHEREAS, Nancy Smith and Jerome Federlein met in Nigeria; Nancy
moved to the United States in 1968, and the couple were married that
same year; in 1973, they settled in Port Washington; and

WHEREAS, After earning a Master of Science in Chemistry from Adelphi
University in 1980, Nancy Federlein taught for 22 years while serving as
a faculty advisor for various school clubs; and

WHEREAS, Jerome Federlein received his Master of Business
Administration degree at Baruch College in New York City; he worked for

the United States Public Health Service while completing his graduate
studies; and

WHEREAS, In 1973, Jerome Federlein began a 15-year career with
Citibank in various Human Resources and organizational development
roles, serving the Bank's operations and international divisions; after
leaving the Bank in 1989, he consulted on international development
projects prior to the final role in his career, as Personal Financial
Advisor, retiring in 2018; and

WHEREAS, Presently, Nancy Federlein volunteers with the Laundry Love
program at the Port Jewish Center; Jerome Federlein is a Board Member at
the Community Chest of Port Washington, continuing his work on event
committees; and

WHEREAS, Together, Nancy and Jerome Federlein volunteer with Plant a
Row for the Hungry, assisting with the distribution of fresh produce to
the food pantry at Our Lady of Fatima Roman Catholic Church; and

WHEREAS, Throughout the decades of their community service, a period
of constructive involvement in countless programs, organizations, and
services, Nancy and Jerome Federlein have stood constant in dignity and
good grace; and

WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by
individuals for the benefit of others which Nancy and Jerome Federlein
have displayed throughout their lives; and

WHEREAS, It has always been the objective of this Legislative Body
to honor and support those individuals who have displayed their
commitment to the betterment of their communities, and it is the intent
of this Legislative Body to inscribe upon its records this tribute to
Nancy and Jerome Federlein, that future generations may know and
appreciate their admirable character, their many benevolent deeds, and
the respect and esteem in which they are held by their peers; now,
therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Nancy and Jerome Federlein upon the occasion of their designation
for special recognition by the Community Chest of Port Washington; and
be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Nancy and Jerome Federlein.
