Senate Resolution No. 498

MOURNING the death of Carol Shanesy, STEM leader,
community servant, and cherished New Yorker
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
citizens of the State of New York whose lifework and civic endeavor
served to enhance the quality of life in their communities and the great
State of New York; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is proud to mourn the
death of Carol Shanesy, STEM leader, community member, and cherished
member of the family of New York; and
WHEREAS, A resident of Croton-on-Hudson, New York, Carol Shanesy
died on Sunday, March 9, 2025, just shy of her 88th birthday on March
29th; and
WHEREAS, Carol Shanesy distinguished herself in her profession and
by her dedication and contribution to the welfare of her community,
State, and Nation; and
WHEREAS, Carol Shanesy, born in Evanston, Illinois, to Dorothy
Eberhart Shanesy and Harold Dennis Shanesy, and granddaughter of
Governor A.O. Eberhart, was encouraged by her parents to pursue higher
education, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics from Denison
University in 1958 and a Master of Science in Mathematics from
Northwestern University in 1959; and
WHEREAS, In 1959, Carol Shanesy began her career at IBM Research,
contributing to the field of computer science, and later served at the
Rand Corporation; returning to IBM as a Senior Systems Engineer, she
supported Information and Technology innovation for the New York City
Fire and Police Departments; and
WHEREAS, For her work on the computerized fingerprint database and
accolades from IBM, Carol Shanesy received a Civil Commendation from the
NYPD in 1979; and
WHEREAS, Upon moving to Croton-on-Hudson in 1994, Carol Shanesy
became involved in her community, contributing to the creation of the
Jane E. Lytle Memorial Croton Arboretum and the establishment of the
Croton Housing Network; and
WHEREAS, Carol Shanesy organized countless community blood drives
and was known for her generosity and kindness; and
WHEREAS, Carol Shanesy maintained bonds with her cousins, John
Lampe, Ruth Ann Eberhart, Thomas Eberhart, and John Eberhart, and
cherished her friendships, sharing in travel adventures and intellectual
pursuits, including her mastery of the New York Times crossword puzzle;
and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those
dedicated individuals who devote their lives to the betterment of their
communities are worthy and due praise for their commitment and
endeavors; and
WHEREAS, Armed with a humanistic spirit and imbued with a sense of
compassion, Carol Shanesy leaves a legacy which will endure the passage
of time and remain a memory to all she served and befriended; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
mourn the death of Carol Shanesy, STEM leader, community servant, and
cherished New Yorker; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the estate of Carol Shanesy.
