COMMEMORATING the 130th Anniversary of the City of
Johnstown, New York
WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to honor and
commemorate the distinguished histories of the communities which
comprise the noble body of this great Empire State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate the 130th Anniversary of the City of Johnstown in Fulton
County, New York; and
WHEREAS, The land which modern-day Johnstown occupies was originally
settled around 1758; the community was established by William Johnson,
an Irish immigrant and trader known for his connections with Native
American tribes, who came to New York in 1738; and
WHEREAS, The community was originally a village-named "John's Town"
in 1762 after William's son, John Johnson; it was reincorporated as a
village in 1803, then as a city in 1895; and
WHEREAS, Rich in history, the area was the site of the Battle of
Johnstown, one of the last battles of the Revolutionary War with 1,400
participants on the British and American side combined; and
WHEREAS, Furthermore, the renowned suffragette, Elizabeth Cady
Stanton, was born in Johnstown, New York; and
WHEREAS, Alongside Gloversville, the City of Johnstown became
popular for the tanning and leather industry and became known as the
"glove making capital of the world"; and
WHEREAS, The city is home to the Knox gelatin plant, which was built
in 1890 by Charles Knox, then operated by his wife rose after his death
in 1908; their generosity and philanthropic efforts can still be noticed
today in the likes of Knox Park; and
WHEREAS, Remaining fruitful over the ebb and flow of decades of
growth and change, the City of Johnstown continues its commitment to
enhancing the quality of life of its citizens, ensuring a positive
business, institutional, and educational climate, and providing all
essential services; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 130th Anniversary of the City of Johnstown, New York,
recognizing the significance of the role it continues to play in the
life of the communities of the State of New York; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to City of Johnstown.
