COMMEMORATING the 200th Anniversary of the Town of
Sandy Creek, New York, in 2025

WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to honor and
commemorate the distinguished histories of the communities which
comprise the noble body of this great Empire State; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate the 200th Anniversary of the Town of Sandy Creek, New York;
and

WHEREAS, In 1615, the French explorer, Samuel de Champlain, passed
through the town, leading a war party of Hurons and soldiers; and

WHEREAS, It was not until circa 1803, near Lacona, that the town was
first settled; the Town of Sandy Creek was formally established from the
Town of Richland in 1825; the Villages of Lacona and Sandy Creek are
located within the Town; and

WHEREAS, The Town of Sandy Creek is in the northwestern part of
Oswego County; the western border of Sandy Creek is Lake Ontario, and
the northern border is Jefferson County; and

WHEREAS, The Town of Sandy Creek was the home of Thomas Meacham who
sent president Andrew Jackson the largest cheese as a gift in 1835; the
finished product was four feet in diameter, two feet thick, and nearly
1,400 pounds in weight; on February 22, 1836, the President invited the
public to come to the White House and partake of the cheese; and

WHEREAS, Notable individuals who lived in Sandy Creek were Clarence
D. Clark (1851-1930), a member of the United States Congress, and Allen
and James Thompson, brothers who were each awarded the Medal of Honor
for their actions in the Civil War; and

WHEREAS, The Holyoke Cottage, a historic home built in 1905, was
listed on the United States National Register of Historic Places in
1988; and

WHEREAS, Of historic origin, and remaining fruitful over the ebb and
flow of decades of growth and change, the Town of Sandy Creek continues
to provide the quintessential quality of life for its residents; and

WHEREAS, The residents of the Town of Sandy Creek have a bright
outlook for the future of their community which remains a beautiful
place in which to live, raise a family, conduct business, and enjoy the
natural beauty and historical sites that make this sector of New York
State a charming and welcoming community; and

WHEREAS, In recognition of Sandy Creek's rich history and enduring
contribution to the State of New York, this Legislative Body is proud to
pay tribute to this spirited Town upon the occasion of its 200th
Anniversary; now, therefore, be it


RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 200th Anniversary of the Town of Sandy Creek, New York,
recognizing the significance of the role it continues to play in the
life of the communities of the State of New York; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the Town of Sandy Creek.
