Senate Resolution No. 67

COMMEMORATING the 130th Anniversary of the City of
Little Falls, New York
WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to honor and
commemorate the distinguished histories of the communities which
comprise the noble body of this great Empire State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate the 130th Anniversary of the City of Little Falls, New York;
and
WHEREAS, Little Falls was first settled by Europeans around 1723,
when German Palatines were granted land under the Burnetsfield Patent;
it was then the westernmost European settlement in the colony of New
York; and
WHEREAS, Located in Herkimer County, the City of Little Falls was
incorporated in 1895 and is built on both sides of the Mohawk River;
transportation through the valley was improved by construction of the
Erie Canal, completed in 1825 and connecting the Great Lakes with the
Hudson River; and
WHEREAS, With dairy farms located throughout the area, Little Falls
was a major center for the manufacturing of cheese in the third quarter
of the 19th century; its products were shipped to market in New York
City and other major cities; furthermore, in the 20th century it
attracted immigrants from eastern and southern Europe, who worked in
factories for textiles, gloves and other products; and
WHEREAS, The City of Little Falls was home to Nicholas Herkimer, a
Brigadier General during the American Revolution who lost his life at
the Battle of Oriskany; and
WHEREAS, The second smallest city in the State of New York, Little
Falls hosts an Annual Cheese Festival which is the biggest in the
Northeast; and
WHEREAS, Of historic origin, and remaining fruitful over the ebb and
flow of decades of growth and change, the City of Little Falls continues
to provide the quintessential quality of life for its residents; and
WHEREAS, Today, the residents of the City of Little Falls have a
bright outlook for the future of their community, which remains a
beautiful place in which to live and raise a family; and
WHEREAS, In recognition of the City of Little Falls rich history and
enduring contribution to the State of New York, this Legislative Body is
proud to pay tribute to this spirited town upon the occasion of its
130th Anniversary; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 130th Anniversary of the City of Little Falls,
recognizing the significance of the role it continues to play in the
life of the community of the State of New York; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the City of Little Falls, New York.
