MOURNING the death of Carla M. Hawryluk,
distinguished citizen and devoted member of her
community
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
citizens of the State of New York whose lifework and civic endeavor
served to enhance the quality of life in their communities and this
great Empire State; and
WHEREAS, Carla M. Hawryluk of Bedford, New York, died on Monday,
April 14, 2025, at the age of 92; and
WHEREAS, Carla M. Hawryluk was born in Rockville Center, New York,
on January 17, 1933, to parents Carl and May Thorsell; and
WHEREAS, As a child, Carla M. Hawryluk was struck by a vehicle while
playing in her family's driveway in West Hempstead, New York, and she
was saved by emergency brain surgery; despite these hardships, Carla M.
Hawryluk persevered and graduated from Hempstead High School and earned
an associate's degree from Green Mountain College; and
WHEREAS, Once in adulthood, Carla M. Hawryluk moved to Manhattan,
New York, where she worked at Design Research and met the love of her
life, Ted Hawryluk; and
WHEREAS, Carla M. Hawryluk and Ted married and bought a home on 12
wooded acres in Bedford, New York, where they would share the pleasure
of starting a family and raising twins; and
WHEREAS, Carla M. Hawryluk distinguished herself in her actions and
by her sincere dedication and substantial contribution to the welfare of
her community; and
WHEREAS, As a devoted mother, grandmother, and friend to many, Carla
M. Hawryluk saw much value in a strong family and community life, and
she was connected to her community through the Bedford Free Library,
Bedford Golf & Tennis Club, the Bedford Democratic Party, and the
Bedford Presbyterian Church; and
WHEREAS, Carla M. Hawryluk was an avid reader, lover of music and
theater, adventurous traveler, experienced cook, memorable entertainer,
and engaged follower of politics; and
WHEREAS, Carla M. Hawryluk's commitment to excellence, and her
spirit of humanity, carried over into all fields of enterprise,
including charitable and civic endeavors; and
WHEREAS, One of Carla M. Hawryluk's personal passions was animals,
which led her to support many animal rights organizations throughout her
life; and
WHEREAS, Carla M. Hawryluk is survived by her daughter, Christa;
son-in-law, Jeff Collins; and two cherished grandchildren; and
WHEREAS, Armed with a humanistic spirit and imbued with a sense of
compassion, Carla M. Hawryluk leaves behind a legacy which will long
endure the passage of time and will remain as a comforting memory to all
she served and befriended; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
mourn the death of Carla M. Hawryluk, distinguished citizen and devoted
member of her community; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the family of Carla M. Hawryluk.
