HONORING President Harvey Stenger upon the
occasion of his retirement after 13 years of
distinguished service to Binghamton University
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to acknowledge
those individuals whose professional lives and civic endeavors serve to
enhance the stature of the State of New York; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
President Harvey Stenger upon the occasion of his retirement after 13
years of distinguished service to Binghamton University; and
WHEREAS, Before his appointment as president, Harvey Stenger had a
long and illustrious career in higher education; he earned a bachelor's
degree in chemical engineering from Cornell University and a doctorate
in the same field from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology; and
WHEREAS, Harvey Stenger continued to serve the academic industry as
a professor at Lehigh University, where he served as a dean for six
years, as a co-chair of the Department of Chemical Engineering and as
director of the Environmental Studies Center; and
WHEREAS, Harvey Stenger later brought his talents to the University
at Buffalo where he held the position of interim provost, and where he
also served as dean of the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences;
and
WHEREAS, In 2012, Harvey Stenger took on the role of president at
Binghamton University, and for the past 13 years, he has rendered
faithful, conscientious, and invaluable service; and
WHEREAS, During Harvey Stenger's distinguished tenure, overall
student enrollment increased from 14,746 to 18,850, an increase of 28%;
graduate enrollment increased 44%, from 2,885 to 4,140; the number of
full-time faculty is up 53% to 921; professional and classified staff
have grown by 28% to 2,865; and
WHEREAS, In his capacity as president, Harvey Stenger served with
loyalty, honor and distinction; and
WHEREAS, Since taking on the position of Binghamton University's
president, Harvey Stenger has expanded the university's role in
research, and money spent on research has increased by 70%; and
WHEREAS, Binghamton University also credits Harvey Stenger with the
New Energy New York Project which can potentially reach $270 million in
federal and state funding; the project pushes to create a lab-to-market
battery economy in Upstate New York; and
WHEREAS, In his official acts, Harvey Stenger was governed by a keen
sense of duty, always showed a unique grasp of human problems, and
continually demonstrated his commitment to diversity and inclusion to
the Binghamton University campus and the larger community; and
WHEREAS, During his tenure with Binghamton University, Harvey
Stenger earned the admiration, esteem and affection of his colleagues;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor President Harvey Stenger upon the occasion of his retirement after
13 years of distinguished service; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Harvey Stenger.
