COMMEMORATING the 175th Anniversary of the
University of Rochester
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize and
pay tribute to those institutions of high purpose and worthy
accomplishment whose endeavors have faithfully served the citizens of
the State of New York; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate the 175th Anniversary of the University of Rochester; and
WHEREAS, Founded in 1850, the University of Rochester boasts a long
history of advancing knowledge, developing treatments and cures,
contributing to workforce development, leading technological innovation,
enhancing artistic and cultural vibrancy, and reinforcing the resilience
and well-being of many communities; and
WHEREAS, The University of Rochester has always had a deep
commitment to welcoming remarkable individuals with various perspectives
and experiences, which is essential to advancing the university's
missions of education, research, and health care; and
WHEREAS, Research universities are vital to the social, economic,
and physical health of our Nation, and the University of Rochester plays
its part by being a Tier 1 research university with a research budget of
$488 million, boasting world-class research facilities, scientists, and
technologies; and
WHEREAS, Some of the countless advancements made by members of the
University of Rochester community are the HPV vaccine, Lasik surgery,
and music for films loved around the world; and
WHEREAS, As the largest employer in the City of Rochester, New York,
the University of Rochester provides approximately 32,200 jobs in
Rochester and many more throughout the State; these employees provide
the necessary innovation and power that has contributed to the
university's historic legacy; and
WHEREAS, Many scholars and alumni of the University of Rochester are
pioneers in their fields, and members of the University of Rochester
community have produced 13 Pulitzer Prizes, 12 Nobels, 77 Grammys, and
two Guinness World Records; and
WHEREAS, A 2024 report found that the University of Rochester has a
total statewide impact of $13 billion and a nationwide estimated impact
of nearly $18 billion; and
WHEREAS, Recognizing the importance of community stewardship, the
University of Rochester invests more than $2 million annually in
community healthy improvement services and almost $535,000 annually in
local partners to support economic, workforce, and community-building
activities; and
WHEREAS, Over the past 175 years, the University of Rochester has
demonstrated an unwavering commitment to preparing and supporting
compassionate, skilled, and innovative students and scholars who are
determined to tackle the world's greatest challenges; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is proud to honor and commend the
University of Rochester for its outstanding contributions to nearly all
aspects of society, serving as an inspiration for future generations;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 175th Anniversary of the University of Rochester,
celebrating its remarkable history, achievements, and contributions to
society; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the University of Rochester.
