MOURNING the death of Jacinth C. Brown,
distinguished citizen and devoted member of her
community
WHEREAS, Jacinth C. (Daley) Brown, of Far Rockaway, Queens, New
York, died on Tuesday, March 31, 2026, at the age of 89; she was a
beloved mother, teacher, woman of faith, and matriarch whose life joined
discipline, service, learning, and devotion to family across Jamaica and
the United States; and
WHEREAS, The eldest of four children, Jacinth C. Brown was born to
Luther Daley and Robertha McLean in Jamaica on December 23, 1936; she
was a lifelong learner who pursued higher education; after graduating,
she began her career as an educator in Jamaica and the United States;
and
WHEREAS, Jacinth Brown received her early education in Jamaica and
graduated from Moneague Teachers' College, beginning what would become a
long and deeply influential life in education; she taught in New York
City's public schools, including P.S. 104 The Bays Water School in Far
Rockaway, Queens, from which she retired after many years of dedicated
service; and
WHEREAS, Jacinth Brown and her husband, the late Jude Brown, raised
eight children; in Jamaica, she taught for many years at schools in the
public education system, including Bellefield Secondary School; she
migrated to the United States where she built a new life while remaining
true to her calling as an educator, dedicating more than 47 years to
education as a teacher and role model; and
WHEREAS, Over the years, Jacinth Brown served in many capacities
within the local church; as a founding member of Upper Room
International Ministries in Far Rockaway, she remained active well into
her later years as a teacher, preacher, evangelist, prayer leader, and
mentor and supported her community through outreach and service for
several decades; her service was recognized with the President's
Volunteer Service Award in 2021; and
WHEREAS, A devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother,
Jacinth Brown's legacy continues through her loving family; and
WHEREAS, Jacinth Brown is survived by her children, Evet Brown, Carl
Brown, June Brown, Maurene Brown-Phillips, Howard Brown, Karen Brown,
and Courtney Brown; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; nieces and
nephews; and close relatives and friends, former students, and church
members in Jamaica, W.I., the United States, Europe, and beyond; she was
predeceased by her husband, Jude Brown; her son, Colville Smith; and her
siblings, Lystine Fairweather, Fitzroy Daley, and Kipling Daley; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
mourn the death and honor the enduring legacy of Jacinth Brown whose
unwavering faith, compassionate leadership, and lifelong commitment to
service have left an indelible impact on her family, former students,
and congregation; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the family of Jacinth C. Brown.
