MEMORIALIZING Governor Kathy Hochul to proclaim
July 25, 2026, as International Day for Afro-Latin
American, Afro-American and Diaspora Women in the
State of New York

WHEREAS, Women of the African Diaspora are incredibly diverse,
representing hundreds of cultures, ethnicities, languages and countries;
and

WHEREAS, Established in 1992 by the Network of Afro-Latin American
Afro Caribbean and Diaspora Women (RMAAD) in Santo Domingo, Dominican
Republic, this day is rooted in organized resistance and community
building; and

WHEREAS, The United Nations Second International Decade for People
of African Descent is a timeframe designated to confront the legacies of
enslavement and colonialism, deliver reparatory justice, and secure the
full human rights and freedoms of people of African descent worldwide;
and

WHEREAS, The day is recognized in conjunction with the United
Nations Decade for People of African Descent and the Afro-Latino
Festival of New York which has served as an event to amplify the
principles of justice, recognition, and development, since 2014; and

WHEREAS, The authentic cultural recognition and substantive civic
engagement that marks July 25th goes beyond a single day and is part of
a month-long cultural campaign grounded in programming, civic education
and community solidarity; and

WHEREAS, By recognizing this day we honor the resilience,
leadership, and cultures of the diaspora women in this state and the
communities they represent; and

WHEREAS, We honor the diversity of the diaspora and the strength it
brings to our state; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
memorialize Governor Kathy Hochul to proclaim July 25, 2026, as
International Day for Afro-Latin American, Afro-American and Diaspora
Women in the State of New York.; and be it further

RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to The Honorable Kathy Hochul, Governor of the State of New
York.
