COMMEMORATING the inaugural Jamaica Rising Day
Parade in the United States on August 8, 2026, in
Brooklyn, New York
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and
honor events of cultural and historical significance which exemplify the
rich diversity and enduring contributions of the communities of New York
State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate the inaugural Jamaica Rising Day Parade in the United
States, to be held on Saturday, August 8, 2026, in Brooklyn, New York,
an event which will celebrate the vibrant cultural heritage of Jamaica
and the Jamaican-American community; and
WHEREAS, The celebration of Jamaican independence affirms the
culture, identity, and self-esteem of a people; it honors a rich
heritage and illuminates Jamaican history and tradition, as well as the
spirit of an indomitable people; and
WHEREAS, The mission of this parade includes the celebration and
protection of Jamaican culture, music, heritage, education, global
influence, and community empowerment; and
WHEREAS, The parade route, beginning on Flatbush Avenue and Nostrand
Avenue and concluding on Washington Avenue and Empire Boulevard, will
showcase the colors, sounds, and spirit of the Jamaican identity; and
WHEREAS, Every year, August 6th is celebrated as Independence Day in
Jamaica; the country acquired its independence from the British colonial
powers on August 6, 1962, after years of political subjugation;
initially a Spanish territory, Jamaica was soon taken over by the
British in the 17th Century; and
WHEREAS, This year will mark the 64th anniversary of Jamaica's
independence, and the first ever Jamaican Rising Day Parade stands as a
proud testament to the lasting cultural impact, unity, and contributions
of the Jamaican-American community on the anniversary of its
independence, and serves as a celebration of heritage, history, and the
vibrant diversity that enriches the State of New York; and
WHEREAS, The members and leadership of the Jamaica Rising Day Parade
Executive Leadership and Advisory Council are to be commended for their
tireless commitment to cultural preservation, education, and the
celebration of Jamaican identity, and for their efforts to foster
multicultural understanding throughout the State of New York; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the inaugural Jamaican Rising Day Parade in the United
States on August 6, 2026, in Brooklyn, New York, and to applaud the
Jamaican-American community for their outstanding contributions to the
cultural fabric of this State; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the Jamaica Rising Day Parade Executive Leadership &
Advisory Council.
