COMMEMORATING the 35th Anniversary of Lithuania
Independence Restoration Day

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and
pay just tribute to the cultural heritage of the ethnic groups which
comprise and contribute to the richness and diversity of the community
of the State of New York; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate and celebrate the 35th Anniversary of Lithuania Independence
Restoration Day; and

WHEREAS, Lithuania has been a strong ally of the United States and
established diplomatic relations with our Nation on July 28, 1922;
together, both countries have celebrated more than 100 years of
friendship and a strong global partnership; and

WHEREAS, Despite Lithuania's being occupied by Nazi Germany and the
Soviet Union during and after World War II, the people of Lithuania
never waned from their desire for their own free and independent nation;
and

WHEREAS, Through the people's determination and love of country,
Lithuania finally obtained its rightfully deserved independence in 1990
and has celebrated Day of Restoration of Independence every year on
March 11th; and

WHEREAS, The State of New York proudly boasts having one of the
largest Lithuanian American populations and is home to several memorials
and tributes, including Lithuania Square, King Jagiello Monument, and
the Lithuanian War Memorial; and

WHEREAS, Groups like the Knights of Lithuania continue to promote
not only the culture and importance of Lithuania but also the shared
bond between Lithuania and the United States; and

WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is pleased to have this opportunity
to recognize such a significant event which fosters ethnic pride and
exemplifies the cultural diversity that represents and strengthens the
fabric of the Lithuanian people, the State of New York, and the country
of Lithuania; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate and joyfully celebrate the 35th Anniversary of Lithuania
Independence Restoration Day; and be it further

RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the Lithuanian Consul General to New York and to the
Knights of Lithuania.
