COMMEMORATING the life of Rabbi Shmuel Butman for
his lifelong dedication to Jewish life, leadership,
and community service in the State of New York

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
citizens of the State of New York whose lifework and civic endeavor
served to enhance the quality of life in their communities and this
great Empire State; and

WHEREAS, Rabbi Shmuel Butman of New York State died on Monday, July
22, 2024; and

WHEREAS Rabbi Shmuel Butman dedicated his life to the service of the
Jewish people, the advancement of Jewish education, and the
strengthening of spiritual and moral values in the broader community;
and

WHEREAS, Rabbi Shmuel Butman served for decades as the prominent
leader of the Chabad-Lubavitch movement, directing the Lubavitch Youth
Organization and spearheading numerous initiatives that have impacted
thousands in New York State and far beyond; and

WHEREAS, The tireless efforts of Rabbi Shmuel Butman have included
organizing public menorah lightings, educational seminars, outreach
programs, and youth activities that promote understanding, compassion,
and faith across communities; and

WHEREAS, Rabbi Shmuel Butman has also been a respected speaker,
author, and host of Jewish radio programming, using every medium at his
disposal to share the richness of Jewish heritage and the timeless
values of Torah; and

WHEREAS, As a devoted emissary of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi
Menachem Mendel Schneerson, Rabbi Shmuel Butman embodied the Rebbe's
vision of bringing light, learning, and leadership to the world; and

WHEREAS, The contributions left behind by Rabbi Shmuel Butman have
made a lasting impact on countless individuals and families, fostering
unity, hope, and spiritual growth across generations; and

WHEREAS, Rabbi Shmuel Butman leaves behind a legacy that was forged
in the Jewish principle of chesed, which translates to loving-kindness;
now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the extraordinary life and contributions of Rabbi Shmuel
Butman for his enduring leadership, selfless service, and invaluable
contributions to religious life, education, and community empowerment;
and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the family of Rabbi Shmuel Butman.
