COMMEMORATING the 60th Anniversary of Guyana's
freedom from British rule and recognizing Guyanese
Independence Day to honor the nation's freedom
WHEREAS, On May 26, 1966, the Co-operative Republic of Guyana gained
independence from British colonial rule; it marked a historic moment of
national sovereignty, self-determination, and pride for the Guyanese
people; and
WHEREAS, Guyanese Independence Day and honoring the nation's 60
years of independence are vital recognitions of the continued
resilience, strength, and unity of its people who fought for freedom,
dignity, and the right to govern themselves while continuing to be a
global catalyst for positive change; and
WHEREAS, The Republic of Guyana is home to a richly diverse cultural
heritage shaped by the contributions of Afro-Guyanese, Indo-Guyanese,
Indigenous peoples, and communities of Portuguese, Chinese, and European
descent, creating a vibrant melting pot and prosperous society; and
WHEREAS, New York State is home to the largest Guyanese Diaspora
population in the nation whose communities have significantly
contributed to advancing vital areas such as education, business, the
arts, public service, healthcare, and more, ultimately enriching the
social and cultural fabric of our State; and
WHEREAS, Guyanese Independence Day is an opportunity to reflect on
the Guyanese fight for freedom, while honoring the sacrifices of those
who paved the way, as well as to celebrate our shared values of unity,
progress, and national pride; and
WHEREAS, Celebrations of Guyanese independence-marked by parades,
cultural showcases, cuisine, music, and community events-unite New
Yorkers in continuing to welcome our Guyanese neighbors, while bringing
all together in a shared spirit of pride, remembrance, and joy; and
WHEREAS, Recognizing and celebrating the 60th anniversary Guyanese
Independence affirms our commitment to respecting diversity, inclusion,
and our commitment to honor all the cultural identities that comprise
the great fabric of our State; and
WHEREAS, The people of New York share deep historical, familial, and
economic ties with the people of Guyana, and proudly join in celebrating
cultural traditions and enduring friendships that unite us; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 60th Anniversary of Guyana's freedom from British rule
and recognize Guyanese Independence Day to honor the nation's freedom;
and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the Consulate General of Guyana in New York as a token of
the esteem and appreciation held by the people of New York State.
