LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending Ex-Chief Herman Wiegand upon the occa-
sion of his designation for special recognition after 50 years of dedi-
cated service to the Manhasset-Lakeville Fire Department, Great Neck,
New York

WHEREAS, The firefighters of New York State are renowned throughout the
Nation; their reputation is synonymous with excellence in the arduous
field of fire protection and prevention; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to commend Ex-Chief
Herman Wiegand upon the occasion of his designation for special recogni-
tion after 50 years of dedicated service to the Manhasset-Lakeville Fire
Department, Great Neck, New York, to be celebrated at its Annual Instal-
lation Dinner on Saturday, April 18, 2009, at The Long Island Marriot,
Uniondale, New York; and
WHEREAS, Employed as the Nassau County Fire Marshal, Herman Wiegand
joined the Manhasset-Lakeville Fire Department on September 4, 1959;
since then, he has served the Department in numerous capacities, includ-
ing: 2nd Lieutenant, 1970-1972; 1st Lieutenant, 1972-1974; Captain,
1974-1976; Deputy Chief, 1985-1993; and Chief, 1993-1995; and
WHEREAS, Volunteer firefighters and fire departments not only provide
the critical service of fire protection but also engage in other activ-
ities of great benefit and importance to the communities they serve; and
WHEREAS, With him throughout has been his wife, Joan, who feels privi-
leged to be a part of his life and rejoices in his achievements; and
WHEREAS, It takes a special dedication, a strong desire to help others
and a tireless sense of community to forsake precious time with family
and friends to respond to the signal that a neighbor is in need; Herman
Wiegand is such a firefighter; throughout 50 years of devoted service,
this volunteer heroically performed, above and beyond the call of duty,
those responsibilities which define the task of fire protection; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Ex-Chief Herman Wiegand upon the occasion of his designation for
special recognition after 50 years of dedicated service to the Manhas-
set-Lakeville Fire Department, Great Neck, New York; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Ex-Chief Herman Wiegand.
