LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring centenarian Maria Virginia Driscoll upon
occasion of her designation for special recognition by Dominican Village
of Amityville, New York

WHEREAS, The quality and richness of life in the communities of New York
State are enriched and sustained through the contributions of individ-
uals whose long and purposeful lives personify the values of family,
faith and citizenship; and
WHEREAS, A citizen of such worthy purpose and good works is Maria
Driscoll, an exceptional centenarian whose zest for life and concern for
others has enriched the lives of all those who have had the opportunity
to know and love her; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and
commend such individuals as Maria Driscoll, who have touched the lives
of so many; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor 100
years young Maria Driscoll upon the occasion of her designation for
special recognition by Dominican Village, and Long Island's Amityville
community, at Dominican Village's Annual Dinner Dance on May 2, 2009;
and
WHEREAS, Sponsored by the Sisters of St. Dominic and located in West-
ern Suffolk County, Domincan Village is a non-sectarian, not-for-profit,
Independent and Assistant Living Retirement Community, with Respite
Care, which provides a beautiful living enviornment, enabling Maria
Driscoll and its other residents to live their lives with relaxation, a
choice of activities, opportunities for socializing , and a sense of
purpose; and
WHEREAS, Born on February 22, 1908, Maria Driscoll is the daughter of
James Beattie and Agnes Walsh; her father had immigrated from Scotland
and her mother was from Ireland; she had two brothers, James and
William; and
WHEREAS, Maria Driscoll met Joseph Driscoll at a USO dance in Manhat-
tan in 1933; they married and moved to Brooklyn and later to Valley
Stream, where they raised their three children; today, she has 11 grand-
children and 14 great-grandchildren; and
WHEREAS, Maria and Joseph Driscoll were founding members of Blessed
Sacrament Parish; Maria returned to work in 1954, and held a position in
the Valley Stream School District for 23 years; once retired, she took a
part-time position in the Office of the Diocese of Rockville Centre; and
WHEREAS, Maria Driscoll moved to Dominican Village in 2003; since that
time she has been a vital contributor to the community; she is the
representative of her building at the Resident Council meetings and
enjoys playing bridge, bingo and Mahjongg; and
WHEREAS, This distinguished woman has experienced the incredible joys
and sorrows characteristic of and reserved for those with the stamina
and courage to savor a full life; and
WHEREAS, This beloved lady has enriched the lives of those around her
through her joyous and sincere love for others and through the quiescent
charm and wisdom which comes only from a fullness of years; and
WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to publicly recog-
nize those who have reached such a remarkable age and who have witnessed
and celebrated the innovations, cultural developments and awesome
achievements of this country during the last century, while themselves
contributing to the growth and excellence of this great Empire State;
now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
congratulate Maria Virginia Driscoll upon the occasion of celebrating
her 101st Birthday on February 22, 2009; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Maria Virginia Driscoll.
