LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 90th Anniversary of the Village
of Bayville of Nassau County

WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to honor and commem-
orate the proud and distinguished histories of the communities which
comprise the noble body of this great Empire State; and
WHEREAS, In accord with its long-standing traditions, it is the
purpose of this Legislative Body to now commemorate the 90th Anniversary
of the Village of Bayville in Nassau County, New York on Friday, July
17, 2009; and
WHEREAS, For this special occasion, a day of observation and activ-
ities will be held on Saturday, May 23, 2009; and
WHEREAS, Daniel Whitehead lived in Oyster Bay and purchased land from
the Matinecock Indians; this area was known as Oak Neck and Pine Island
and was later named Bayville in 1859; and
WHEREAS, The first school was constructed in 1851 on Merritt Lane and
the Methodist Church was located just west of the school; the first
drawbridge connected Bayville to Mill Neck and there was transportation
by water taxi that operated between Bayville and Oyster Bay; in addi-
tion, a ferry service operated between Bayville and Stamford, Connecti-
cut; and
WHEREAS, A casino was built at Oak Neck Beach in 1913 bringing people
to this fabulous summer community with popular beaches; known as "The
Oyster Company", founded in 1887, the firm of Frank M. Flower & Sons,
Inc. was the only industry in Bayville; the company is the producer of
the famous Pine Island Oyster; and
WHEREAS, Bayville became an incorporated village in 1919; the Bayville
bridge was completely reconstructed in 1991, 93 years since the first
bridge was built; if Robert Moses constructed a bridge across Long
Island Sound, the Village of Bayville would have been divided and would
not have remained the quaint community it is today; and
WHEREAS, Remaining fruitful over the ebb and flow of decades of growth
and change, the Village of Bayville continues its commitment to enhanc-
ing the quality of life of its citizens, ensuring a positive business,
institutional and educational climate, and providing all essential
services; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 90th Anniversary of the Village of Bayville of Nassau
County, recognizing the significance of the role it continues to play in
the life of the community of the State of New York; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Victoria Siegel, Mayor of the Village of Bayville.
