LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending Rolando Scott, Jr. upon the occasion
of his designation for special recognition at the 43rd Annual Dinner
Dance of the United Progressive Club on May 7, 2009

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and
commend individuals who distinguish themselves in their profession and
in service to their community; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern and fully in accord with its long-
standing traditions, it is the sense of this Legislative Body to commend
Rolando Scott, Jr., President of Communication Workers of America (CWA)
Local 1109, upon the occasion of his designation for special recognition
at the 43rd Annual Dinner Dance of the United Progressive Club, to be
held at The Rex Manor in Brooklyn, New York, on Thursday, May 7, 2009;
and
WHEREAS, Rolando Scott began his career with the New York Telephone
Company in 1990 as a Cable Splicer at Nevins Street Garage in Brooklyn;
he became a Local 1109 Shop Steward in 1993 and was very active in his
garage working tirelessly on behalf of its members and encouraging them
to become more active in union affairs; and
WHEREAS, He completed Advanced Steward training in 1996 and, later
that year, was named to Local 1109's Membership Committee; in 1998 he
became a Business Agent and was responsible for the Cable Splicing
Garages in North Brooklyn as well as various Central Offices; his dedi-
cation to the entire membership made him a popular leader throughout the
borough, leading to his becoming, in 1999, Vice Chairman of 1109's
Borough-wide Transfer and Canvass Over-Site Committee; and
WHEREAS, An outstanding public speaker, Rolando Scott has often helped
represent the union's views at national and New York State Legislative
conferences and hearings and State Public Service Commission hearings,
and he annually attends the C.W.A. National Legislative conferences in
Washington, D.C.; and
WHEREAS, In 2004, Rolando Scott was elected a member of the Local 1109
Executive Board; he became the Co-Chairperson of the Brooklyn Tier II
Joint Union/Management Safety Committee and was instrumental in intro-
ducing an innovative Ladder Safety Program for Field Technicians to the
borough, and he also served on the CWA/Verizon New York State Ergonomics
Tool Committee; and
WHEREAS, After graduating from Brooklyn Tech, he spent two years at
New York Institute of Technology and two years at City College of The
City University of New York; in 2003, he received a certificate from
Cornell University School of Industrial and Labor Relations in Ithaca,
New York, in District One Leadership Training and he has also completed
Cornell University Labor Studies courses in New York City; and
WHEREAS, In 2007, Rolando Scott, Jr. was elected President of Local
1109; in addition to the many responsibilities of this position, he is a
member of the AFL-CIO, New York City Central Labor Council, the C.W.A.
N.Y. Down State Coordinating Council and the C.W.A./Verizon N.Y.S.
Employee Placement Team and is also the Fund Manager of the Local 1109
Pension & Welfare Fund and a Trustee of the CWA Long Island Federal
Credit Union; and
WHEREAS, He was instrumental in arranging for Cornell Industrial Labor
Relations College to partner with CWA to offer, since 2008, courses for
stewards and staff at the union's headquarters in Brooklyn and in
involving Local 1109 in community Toy Drives at Brooklyn Hospital and
Breast Cancer Walks in Prospect Park; and

WHEREAS, With Rolando Scott, Jr. throughout have been his wife Lisa
and their daughter Safiya, both of whom are proud to be part of his life
and rejoice in his accomplishments; and
WHEREAS, Rolando Scott, Jr. has distinguished himself in his profes-
sion and in his community and truly merits the recognition of this
Legislative Body; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Rolando Scott, Jr. upon the occasion of his designation for
special recognition at the 43rd Annual Dinner Dance of the United
Progressive Club on May 7, 2009; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Rolando Scott, Jr.
