LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Vivian Hackett, posthumously, upon the
occasion of her designation as recipient of the Trailblazer Award by the
Fort Greene Senior Citizens Council, Inc.

WHEREAS, Is is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize that the
quality and character of life in the communities across New York State
are reflective of the concerned and dedicated efforts of those organiza-
tions and individuals who would devote themselves to the welfare of the
community and its citizenry; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Vivian Hack-
ett, posthumously, upon the occasion of her designation as recipient of
the Trailblazer Award by the Fort Greene Senior Citizens Council, Inc.,
to be celebrated on Wednesday, May 20, 2009, at the Brooklyn Botanical
Gardens; and
WHEREAS, Vivian Hackett was born in Bank Hall, St. Michaels, in Barba-
dos; she attended Westbury Girls School in St. Michaels, and Erdiston
Teacher's Training College; she was a school teacher in the Barbados
educational system for over 40 years, specializing in early childhood
education; and
WHEREAS, For the last seven years of Vivian Hackett's career, she was
the Headmistress of the Erdiston Nursery School, which for many years
was the model school for nursery education in Barbados; and
WHEREAS, After the death of Vivian Hackett's husband, the late
Fitzherbert Hackett, she traveled extensively, often ending up in a city
where her children were residing; in early 1993, she traveled to
Israel/Lebanon to visit her daughter, Yvonne, who was on assignment in
the Peacekeeping Mission in Lebanon; in 1994, Mrs. Hackett decided to
make Brooklyn her permanent residence; and
WHEREAS, Vivian Hackett became a very active member of the Christopher
Blenman Senior Center; here she was able to further extend her know-
ledge, capabilities and adeptness, all of which she exemplified as a
teacher and School Principal; periodically, she was requested to speak
and participate in various activities and programs of the Center,
including Black History Month, Women's History Month, Kwanzaa and
Christmas Programs, to name a few; and
WHEREAS, Vivian Hackett is survived by her five children, Yvonne,
Christopher, Grace, Felicia Rosita, and Philip Ezra, and her eight
grandchildren; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those who
enhance the well-being and vitality of their community and have shown a
long and sustained commitment to excellence, certainly have earned
recognition and applause; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Vivian Hackett, posthumously, upon the occasion of her designation
as recipient of the Trailblazer Award by the Fort Greene Senior Citizens
Council, Inc.; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the family of Vivian Hackett.
