LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring the Panama Canal International Alumni
Association, Inc. upon the occasion of its 17th Annual Ecumenical Comme-
morative Service and Awards Presentation

WHEREAS, It is incumbent upon the people of the State of New York to
recognize and acknowledge those within our midst who have made signif-
icant contributions to the quality of life therein; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor the Panama
Canal International Alumni Association, Inc. upon the occasion of its
17th Annual Ecumenical Commemorative Service and Awards Presentation on
Sunday, June 7, 2009, in Brooklyn, New York; and
WHEREAS, The Panama Canal International Alumni Association, Inc., is
an organization which consists of students who either attended or gradu-
ated from schools in the former Canal Zone area; and
WHEREAS, These particular schools, which existed for more than 30
years, are part of the legacy of its region; and
WHEREAS, This special service is held in memory of its late teachers
and students; and
WHEREAS, The award recipients include: Professor Gloria Holmess Smythe
and Professor Louis McGrath Walker, the PCIAA 2009 Educational Awardees;
Dr. Robert H. Beecher, the first Black Principal of La Boca High School,
the PCIAA 2009 Posthumous Award; and Mr. Gregorio Mayers, Esq., Senior
Policy Advisor; Office of the Mayor, City of New York, the PCIAA 2009
Distinguished Alumnus Award; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when organiza-
tions' aims and accomplishments are brought to our attention, they
should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of the great
State of New York; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor the Panama Canal International Alumni Association, Inc. upon the
occasion of its 17th Annual Ecumenical Commemorative Service and Awards
Presentation; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Panama Canal International Alumni Association, Inc.
