LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Stephanie Heineman upon the occasion of
her retirement after many years of distinguished service as Director of
the Northport-East Northport Public Library

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize that the
quality and character of life in the communities across New York State
are reflective of the concerned and dedicated efforts of those individ-
uals and organizations that are devoted to the welfare of the community
and its citizenry; and
WHEREAS, Individuals who give of their time and energies and serve the
best interests of their communities are an asset beyond remuneration and
cannot be sufficiently extolled; and
WHEREAS, It is also the custom of this Legislative Body to acknowledge
outstanding individuals whose professional lives, personal endeavors and
community service are an example and inspiration to their colleagues,
friends, and family; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Stephanie Heineman upon the occasion of her retirement after many years
of distinguished service as Director of the Northport-East Northport
Public Library; and
WHEREAS, After more than 20 years of service, Stephanie Heineman,
Director of the Northport-East Northport Public Library, will retire in
July 2009; she assumed leadership of the Library in 1988; her retirement
is the culmination of almost 40 years as a library professional on Long
Island; and
WHEREAS, During her tenure at the Northport-East Northport Public
Library, Stephanie Heineman was renowned for her strong commitment to
raise the profile of the library through vigorous marketing of services
to the community; her remarkably successful efforts included: the inno-
vative "Taking the Stacks to the Streets" program; an ongoing current
events and historical perspectives discussion series; and the establish-
ment of unique teen services and opportunities programs; and
WHEREAS, A passionate proponent of fostering the love of reading in
children, Stephanie Heineman encouraged the Library's unique progressive
series, "The Road to Reading," and the creation of The Museum Cove, a
specially designed learning environment for children and their families;
and
WHEREAS, Stephanie Heineman also instituted both the Library's
"Special Loan Service for Our Schools" program, establishing a partner-
ship between the Library and local schools, and "Parent Center," provid-
ing support to parents through special collections and dedicated work-
shops; and
WHEREAS, The dedicated and inspired leadership of Stephanie Heineman
as Director of the Northport-East Northport Public Library resulted in
the Library's being named the recipient of The Good Neighbor Award,
conferred in 2005 by THE TIMES OF NORTHPORT; in 2009, LIBRARY JOURNAL
magazine confirmed the accomplishments made possible under her manage-
ment by honoring the Library as a "four star library," ranking it among
the top 3.5 percent of the nation's public libraries; and
WHEREAS, Stephanie Heineman has continually sought to advance
libraries as dynamic entities, a growing resource, and an essential
component of local communities; she is active and instrumental in the
Long Range Planning Committee of the Suffolk Cooperative Library System,
the Public Library Directors' Association, and as a Board Member of the
Long Island Library Resources Council; and

WHEREAS, In addition, Stephanie Heineman serves as an adjunct profes-
sor at C.W. Post/Long Island University; she is a past president of the
Northport Rotary Club and in 1995 was named a Paul Harris Fellow; and
WHEREAS, Stephanie Heineman's extraordinary vision, commitment, and
talent have been the foundation that has energized the Northport-East
Northport Public Library for so many years; and
WHEREAS, Throughout the entire period of her professional and communi-
ty service, a period of constructive involvement, Stephanie Heineman has
stood constant in dignity, good grace and humor, and has earned the
respect and admiration of her colleagues, family and friends; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when an indi-
vidual of such noble aims and accomplishments is brought to our atten-
tion, she should be recognized and applauded by all the citizens of this
great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Stephanie Heineman upon the occasion of her retirement after many
years of distinguished service as Director of the Northport-East North-
port Public Library; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Stephanie Heineman, Director, Northport-East Northport Public
Library, Northport, New York 11768.
