LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Reverend Monsignor Peter V. Kain upon
the occasion of his induction into the Bishop Kearney High School Hall
of Fame on March 5, 2010
WHEREAS, The character and richness of religious and community life in
this noble Empire State is nourished and fulfilled through the faithful
concern and selfless devotion of those who would commit their energies
and purpose to the ministry of others; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Reverend Monsignor Peter V. Kain upon the occasion of his induction into
the Bishop Kearney High School Hall of Fame at a Dinner Dance to be held
on Friday, March 5, 2010, at Sirico's Caterers, Brooklyn, New York; and
WHEREAS, Born in Astoria, New York, Rev. Msgr. Peter V. Kain is the
first born child of Catherine and Peter Kain; in 1941, his family moved
to Flushing and he attended St. Andrew Avellino Elementary School; and
WHEREAS, During his high school years, Rev. Msgr. Peter V. Kain's
thoughts about priesthood became more and more focused; after graduating
from Power Memorial Academy, he entered Cathedral College Seminary in
Brooklyn; his seminary training took place at the Seminary of the Imma-
culate Conception in Huntington, New York; and
WHEREAS, On May 29, 1965, Peter V. Kain was ordained to the priesthood
by Archbishop Bryan McEntegart at St. James Cathedral Basilica; and
WHEREAS, During this time at the seminary, Rev. Msgr. Peter V. Kain
obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in philosophy and an S.T.B. in theol-
ogy; later on in life, he also earned a Master of Arts degree in educa-
tion from Manhattan College and an S.T.M. in Pastoral Counseling from
New York Theological Seminary; and
WHEREAS, Rev. Msgr. Peter V. Kain's more than 44 years of priesthood
can be characterized by a variety of ministries; his first assignment
was as Chaplain at the Bishop McDonnell Camp in Commack; thereafter,
from 1965-1969, he was assigned to St. Catherine of Siena Parish in St.
Albans; following this assignment, for the next 16 years, he was a
Campus Minister at Kingsborough Community College and Queensborough
Community College; and
WHEREAS, Then, in December 1984, Bishop Mugavero appointed Rev. Msgr.
Peter V. Kain as Pastor of Our Lady of Lourdes in Queens Village, where
he had been a weekend and summer assistant during his time as a campus
minister; in 1989, he was named a Chaplain to His Holiness with the
title Monsignor; in 1997, Bishop Daily appointed him Pastor of St.
Ephrem Parish where he continues to minister today; and
WHEREAS, Additionally, Rev. Msgr. Peter V. Kain has served in many
ancillary ministries in the diocese; he has given retreats to religious
men, women and college students, has directed a draft counseling service
during the early 1970s, was vice president of the former Priests' Senate
and also served as Chair of the Personnel Committee; and
WHEREAS, In 2003, Bishop DiMarzio appointed him to be the Executive
Secretary of the Presbyteral Council; from 2002 to 2004, he served as
facilitator of the Bay Ridge/Dyker Heights Cluster; for nine years, he
served on the Board of Trustees at Xaverian High School and is presently
on the Board at Fontbonne Hall Academy; and
WHEREAS, In March of 2007, Pope Benedict XVI elevated Rev. Msgr. Peter
V. Kain to a "Prelate of Honor to his Holiness"; he was appointed, in
November 2009, to the Board of Consulters of the diocese; he has also
assisted Bishops Kearney and Fontbonne in Advent and Lent with the
Sacrament of Reconciliation; and
WHEREAS, Rev. Msgr. Peter V. Kain has brought to his ministry an over-
whelming spirit of charity and compassion, acting from vision and
enlightenment in conducting his administrative and spiritual duties,
while always displaying the highest standards of personal and profes-
sional integrity and dedication; and
WHEREAS, This distinguished man of God has always given enlightenment,
guidance and wisdom to the many entrusted to his care and has adminis-
tered abundantly and unstintingly to the spiritual and corporal needs of
all; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when a person
of such noble aims and accomplishments is brought to our attention, it
is appropriate to publicly and jubilantly proclaim and commend that
individual for the edification of others; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Reverend Monsignor Peter V. Kain upon the occasion of his
induction into the Bishop Kearney High School Hall of Fame on March 5,
2010; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Reverend Monsignor Peter V. Kain.
