LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the Joseph
B. Cavallaro Council No. 4884, Knights of Columbus
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and pay
tribute to those fraternal organizations of high purpose and worthy
accomplishment whose endeavors have faithfully served the welfare of the
citizens of the State of New York; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to commemorate the 50th
Anniversary of the Joseph B. Cavallaro Council No. 4884, Knights of
Columbus on Sunday, April 11, 2010; and
WHEREAS, The Joseph B. Cavallaro Council No. 4884, Knights of Columbus
was founded in February of 1960; it was named after a prominent communi-
ty leader in the Bensonhurst area of Brooklyn, Dr. Joseph B. Cavallaro,
an outstanding Catholic layman and American citizen devoting himself to
the practice of his Catholic Faith and to the interests of his communi-
ty; and
WHEREAS, In December of 1948, Dr. Cavallaro was appointed as "Knight
of the Holy Sepulchre" by His Holiness Pope Pius 12th with approval of
His Excellency Thomas E. Molloy, then Bishop of Brooklyn; in September
of 1952, he was elevated to "Knight Commander of the Holy Sepulchre" by
His Holiness Pope Pius 12th with approval of His Eminence Francis Cardi-
nal Spellman; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Cavallaro passed away on August 22, 1957; today, the
members of Joseph B. Cavallaro Council are proud to follow his leader-
ship through the Knights of Columbus where they have the opportunity to
offer their time and energy to the needs of mankind; and
WHEREAS, Each year, just before Thanksgiving, the Joseph B. Cavallaro
Council No. 4884 collects food and clothing for the needy; the food is
donated to St. Athanasius' Food Pantry where it is distributed to neigh-
borhood families going through hardships; the clothes are then donated
to an organization called CHIPS, a nonprofit charitable organization
that has been dedicated to helping the poor, needy, and homeless; and
WHEREAS, Also known as Park Slope Christian Help, CHIPS serves more
than 70,000 meals annually and gives temporary shelter to more than
2,000 people each year; and
WHEREAS, Organizations of singular distinction such as the Joseph B.
Cavallaro Council No. 4884, Knights of Columbus provide a model for
enhancing the quality of life in the community and, as such, merit the
grateful praise of the community of the State of New York; now, there-
fore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Joseph B. Cavallaro Council No.
4884, Knights of Columbus; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Joseph B. Cavallaro Council No. 4884, Knights of Colum-
bus.
