LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring E. Geneva Conway upon her designation as
the recipient of a 2010 Harriet Tubman Humanitarian Achievement Award

WHEREAS, This Legislative Body takes great pride in recognizing individ-
uals who, through their lifework and civic endeavors, distinguish them-
selves in service to their community, heritage and profession and serve
as an inspiration to their colleagues, friends and family; and
WHEREAS, Such individuals, who give of their time and energies and
serve the best interests of their communities, are an asset beyond
remuneration and cannot be sufficiently extolled; and
WHEREAS, E. Geneva Conway has given not only of her time and energies
but also of her competence, intelligence and leadership, and consequent-
ly has been designated for special honor; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor E. Geneva
Conway of Albany, New York, upon her designation as the recipient of a
2010 Harriet Tubman Humanitarian Achievement Award; and
WHEREAS, This prestigious award is presented annually by The Harriet
Tubman Humanitarian Achievement Awards Jubilee, Inc. to individuals from
across New York State who, through their volunteerism and commitment to
the poor, the powerless, and the persecuted, reflect the unselfish spir-
it and commitment of Harriet Tubman to the freedom of enslaved African
Americans; and
WHEREAS, Geneva Conway truly merits the high honor of the Harriet
Tubman Humanitarian Achievement Award, conferred upon her at the 9th
Annual Harriet Tubman Humanitarian Achievement Awards Jubilee held on
Saturday, March 13, 2010 at the historic Wilborn Temple First Church of
God in Christ in Albany; and
WHEREAS, Geneva Conway was born in Shubuta, Mississippi to the late
George and Dora Woodard; the eldest of nine children, she attended, and
graduated from, the schools of the Albany City Public School District
and SUNY at Cobleskill, where she earned an associate degree in home
economics; and
WHEREAS, She also holds a Bachelor of Theology degree from the Mid-
Hudson Bible Institute, which, in 2008, awarded her an honorary doctoral
degree; and
WHEREAS, After graduation from college, Geneva Conway immediately
accepted the position of Tray Line Supervisor at the Albany Memorial
Hospital, formerly Memorial Hospital, where she achieved the position of
Assistant Director of Dietary Services, from which she retired in 1999,
after 41 years of outstanding and dedicated service; and
WHEREAS, Active in her profession as well as her church and community,
Geneva Conway served as National President of the Dietary Managers Asso-
ciation and as a member of its Credentialing and Program Committees, and
of other committees when needed, and continues to serve as a consultant
to Albany area adult homes; and
WHEREAS, Geneva Conway has been called upon to contribute her time and
talents to countless civic and charitable endeavors and has always given
of herself unstintingly; and
WHEREAS, As a young adult, in the late 1940s, Geneva Conway and her
parents helped foster the legacy of Harriet Tubman, assisting families
moving from the South to the North to find housing and employment,
including at Memorial Hospital; and
WHEREAS, Geneva Conway remains active in retirement working on behalf
of the AARP Legislative Office, the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Girls Inc.,
and the Albany County Community Accountability Board; and
WHEREAS, A long and faithful member of the Wilborn Temple First Church
of God in Christ in Albany, Geneva Conway serves the church in many

capacities, including but not limited to Pastor's Aid Leader, Coordina-
tor of Lay Sisters Services, Culinary Coordinator, member of the Wilborn
Temple Mother's Board, and Assistant Dean of the Mid-Hudson Bible Insti-
tute, Albany Branch, where she also teaches the 4th year graduating
class; and
WHEREAS, She also serves as the District Missionary of the Western
District of the First Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction of the Churches of
Eastern New York and as the Executive Administrator of the New York
State Women's Department; and
WHEREAS, Throughout the entire period of her service, a period of
constructive involvement, Geneva Conway has stood constant in dignity,
good grace and humor and, fittingly, has been honored many times for her
good works and extraordinary contributions; and
WHEREAS, The awards and commendations Geneva Conway has received
include the Dietary Managers Association's First Distinguished Service
Award; Wilborn Temple's Woman of the Year Award; Albany's New Covenant
Fellowship Worship Center's Woman of Courage Award; the Antioch Chris-
tian Center's Living Legend Award; the Citizen Actions Jim Perry Award;
and the First Ecclesiastical Church of God in Christ's Auxiliaries in
Ministry Department's Outstanding Service Award; and
WHEREAS, Geneva Conway is, in addition, the worthy recipient of the
Make-A-Wish Foundation's 2000 Behind the Scene Volunteer Award; the 2001
Alpha Chi Omicron Award for Encouraging Young People Through Employment
Opportunities; 2000, 2001, 2004 and 2007 AARP Outstanding Service and
Advocacy Awards; and a 2008 Albany County District Attorney's Office
Community Accountability Board Certificate of Appreciation; and
WHEREAS, Geneva Conway believes deeply that to whom much is given,
much is required and tells young people we have to give back; that our
hands, time and knowledge have to be extended to our brothers and
sisters to help them achieve their dreams and, fondly and frequently
reminds people that no man, or woman, is an island and that it does take
a village to raise a child; and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an individ-
ual for the benefit of others which Geneva Conway has displayed through-
out her life; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individ-
uals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be recognized and celebrated by all the citizens of
the great State of New York; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor E. Geneva Conway upon the occasion of her designation as the
recipient of a 2010 Harriet Tubman Humanitarian Achievement Award,
commending her good works and lauding her accomplishments and unwavering
labor on behalf of her community, church and profession; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to E. Geneva Conway.
