LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring David A. Adler upon the occasion of his
designation by the Association of Orthodox Jewish Teachers as the recip-
ient of its Author of the Year Award on April 25, 2010

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and
commend illustrious individuals of distinguished purpose whose lives
have been committed to the pursuit of excellence in the education of the
youth of the Empire State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern and fully in accord with its long-
standing traditions, it is the intent of this Legislative Body to
commend David A. Adler upon the occasion of his designation by the Asso-
ciation of Orthodox Jewish Teachers of the New York City Public Schools
as the recipient of its Author of the Year Award; and
WHEREAS, David A. Adler, author of fiction and non-fiction books for
young readers, will be honored at the organization's 40th Annual Lunch-
eon, to be held at The Renaissance in Brooklyn, New York, on Sunday,
April 25, 2010; and
WHEREAS, David A. Adler graduated Queens College in 1968 with a Bach-
elor of Arts degree in economics and education and licenses to teach
mathematics and history; he then worked for nine years as a New York
City math teacher and was a member of AOJT; while teaching he studied at
New York University and in 1971 was awarded an M.B.A. degree in market-
ing; and
WHEREAS, He began work on a Ph.D. degree in marketing when inspiration
struck and he wrote his first book A LITTLE AT A TIME in 1976 and,
suddenly, his focus changed from marketing to writing; and
WHEREAS, David Adler is well-known for his famous mystery series CAM
JANSEN, which consists of 50 books, including THE YOUNG CAM JANSEN
SERIES; Cam Jansen, the girl with the photographic memory, has been
solving mysteries and helping children learn to love reading for more
than 30 years; he is also the author of the PICTURE BOOK BIOGRAPHY
SERIES, non-fiction books for elementary school readers; and
WHEREAS, David Adler has, in addition, written many books on the Holo-
caust including WE REMEMBER THE HOLOCAUST, a book for older readers
which incorporates first hand accounts of the tragedy within the histor-
ical context; among his other books on the Holocaust are THE NUMBER ON
MY GRANDFATHER'S ARM, HIDING FROM THE NAZIS, A HERO AND THE HOLOCAUST:
THE STORY OF JANUSZ KORCZAK AND HIS CHILDREN, HILDE AND ELI: CHILDREN
OF THE HOLOCAUST, and A PICTURE BOOK OF ANNE FRANK; and
WHEREAS, One of David Adler's newest books, DON'T TALK TO ME ABOUT THE
WAR, a work of historical fiction for older readers, takes place in The
Bronx in 1940 and brings the time to life through the eyes of
13-year-old Tommy Duncan; he has also written Jewish holiday books,
books on math, science, and economics, and picture books, and has in
all, published more than 200 books; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individ-
uals of such accomplishment are brought to our attention it is appropri-
ate to publicly proclaim and commend them for the edification and
emulation of others; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor David A. Adler upon the occasion of his designation as the recipi-
ent of the Association of Orthodox Jewish Teachers' Author of the Year
Award on April 25, 2010; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to David A. Adler.
