LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION mourning the death of Raymond P. Corwin, distin-
guished citizen and devoted member of his community
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize those
individuals of preeminent character whose lives exemplified the highest
ideals of humanity and whose lifework and civic endeavor served to
enhance the quality of life in their communities and the great State of
New York; and
WHEREAS, Raymond P. Corwin of Port Jefferson, New York, died on April
6, 2010, at the age of 56; and
WHEREAS, Born on August 24, 1953, Raymond P. Corwin distinguished
himself in his profession and by his sincere dedication and substantial
contribution to the welfare of his community; and
WHEREAS, Raymond P. Corwin was the Executive Director of the New York
Central Pine Barrens Joint Policy and Planning Commission, which was
established to oversee the development and implementation of a Compre-
hensive Management Plan to protect Central Pine Barrens; and
WHEREAS, An exemplary leader, Raymond P. Corwin was the first and only
Executive Director the Commission has ever had, a position he held for
approximately 16 years; in this capacity, he was originally responsible
for developing a management plan to protecting 50,000 acres in the pine
barrens, and enforcing rules of the plan and state legislation for regu-
lating development in the 47,000-acre compatible growth area; just this
past February, he had completed the first update of the original Pine
Barrens Plan; and
WHEREAS, During the 1980s, Raymond P. Corwin was a Board member of the
Long Island Pine Barren Society, where he was instrumental in shaping
the Society's Pine Barrens Protection Initiative which culminated in the
passage of the New York State Pine Barrens Protection Act of 1993; and
WHEREAS, Prior to taking the helm of the Pine Barrens Commission,
Raymond P. Corwin worked for Grumman Aerospace Corporation (now
Northrop-Grumman Corporation) as a Senior Software Engineer; previous to
that, he was employed by the State University of New York at Stony Brook
as a Research Analyst; and
WHEREAS, Raymond P. Corwin's commitment to excellence, and his spirit
of humanity, carried over into all fields of enterprise, including char-
itable and civic endeavors; and
WHEREAS, A life-long environmental advocate, Raymond P. Corwin was
active for more than 25 years in the Long Island Greenbelt Trail Confer-
ence, a hiking and preservation group where he was currently serving as
Vice President; and
WHEREAS, In addition, Raymond P. Corwin served as a member of the
Board of Trustees for the Suffolk County Department of Parks, Recreation
and Conservation; and
WHEREAS, An outdoor enthusiast, Raymond P. Corwin greatly enjoyed
hiking, running, cross country skiing, and swimming; he was also a
talented photographer; and
WHEREAS, Raymond P. Corwin earned his Bachelor of Science degree in
Applied Mathematics and his Master of Science degree in Computer
Science, both from the State University of New York at Stony Brook; and
WHEREAS, A beautiful light in the lives of many, Raymond P. Corwin was
a man of great integrity and commitment, whose warm smile and true
compassion motivated people for the good of his community; Long Island
is a better place for having had him in its midst; and
WHEREAS, Predeceased by his mother, Veronica as well as his grandpar-
ents, Raymond P. Corwin is survived by his wife, Mindy Block, and his
father, William T. Corwin; and
WHEREAS, Armed with a humanistic spirit, imbued with a sense of
compassion, and comforted by a loving family, Raymond P. Corwin leaves
behind a legacy which will long endure the passage of time and will
remain as a comforting memory to all he served and befriended; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
mourn the death of Raymond P. Corwin, recognizing the significance of
his service to the citizens of New York State, and expressing its deep-
est condolences to his family; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the family of Raymond P. Corwin.
