LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION congratulating the Big Apple Academy on earning
State Education Department approval to open and operate a high school
division, the Big Apple Academy High School

WHEREAS, New York State's commitment to education is unparalleled; its
history and stature are secured by the superlative caliber of its
schools and educational professionals and the students they inspire; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is pleased to congratulate the Big
Apple Academy on earning State Education Department approval to open and
operate a high school division, the Big Apple Academy High School; and
WHEREAS, The Big Apple Academy is ably guided by its Principal, Vlad
Gorny, who came to the United States from Russia in 1989 and was Assist-
ant Principal of Yeshiva Shearit Israel in Brooklyn until 1992, when he
opened the first Bambi Daycare Center; and
WHEREAS, As the Bambi children grew, the Daycare Center evolved into
the Big Apple Academy, a private, coeducational school comprised of an
Elementary School serving children in Kindergarten through Grade 5 and a
Junior High School serving students in Grades 6 through 8; and
WHEREAS, The Big Apple Academy is now, in turn, proudly further evolv-
ing to include the Big Apple Academy High School, serving students in
Grades 9 through 12; and
WHEREAS, The Big Apple Academy is well-known and highly regarded for
providing academic excellence in a multicultural community with a very
diverse population and for the reputation it has developed for its
students consistently earning honors in such academic competitions as
the National Math League Olympics and the National Language Arts Olym-
pics; and
WHEREAS, The Big Apple Academy High School will build on these endur-
ing traditions with an academic program which will offer its students
two educational directions or majors, Mathematics and Science and Human-
ities and Law; courses in all the required disciplines; Advanced Place-
ment courses and the opportunity, in Grades 11 and 12, to take courses
at local partnering colleges; laptops at each student's workplace and
other state-of-the-art technology and teaching methods; and
WHEREAS, The Big Apple Academy High School is to be commended as well
for the other priorities it has established for its educational and
instructional programs; these include highly qualified, licensed and
experienced teachers; small classes; student safety; student health;
organized extracurricular hours; the development of leadership skills
and personal responsibility; and instruction based on trust and respect;
and
WHEREAS, Our schools and the dedicated individuals who work day after
day to nurture our children, our most precious resource, play an inte-
gral part in preparing our young people for their futures and in the
future of our State and nation; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
congratulate the Big Apple Academy on earning State Education Department
approval to open and operate a high school division, the Big Apple Acad-
emy High School, fully confident it will inspire generations of young
people in their educational journeys and will help to ensure their
future success; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Dr. Vlad Gorny, Principal of the new Big Apple Academy High
School, Big Apple Educational Center, 2937 86th Street, Brooklyn, New
York 11223.
