LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending Judy Gerowitz upon the occasion of her
designation for special recognition at the 44th Annual Dinner Dance of
the United Progressive Club on May 6, 2010

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and
commend individuals who distinguish themselves in their profession and
in service to their community; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commend
Judy Gerowitz, UFT District 21 Representative, upon the occasion of her
designation for special recognition at the 44th Annual Dinner Dance of
the United Progressive Club, to be held at The Rex Manor in Brooklyn,
New York, on May 6, 2010; and
WHEREAS, A Brooklyn resident since her marriage in 1969, while raising
her family, Judy Gerowitz attended Brooklyn College at night, earning
her bachelor's degree after 12 years of hard work; and
WHEREAS, During this period she also began her career with the New
York City Board of Education as a paraprofessional; after the completion
of her undergraduate studies she was hired as a Special Education Teach-
er at P.S. 226 and, coming from a union family, it was there that she
began her involvement with the United Federation of Teachers, serving
over 15 years as a Chapter Leader; and
WHEREAS, After the teaching day ended Judy Gerowitz worked as a PM
staffer at the union offices assisting members throughout Brooklyn; in
2001 she was hired as a full-time Special Representative for the UFT
and, in 2003, was appointed to the position of District Representative
for District 21, the position in which she continues to ably serve; and
WHEREAS, In this assignment Judy Gerowitz addresses questions and
issues raised by her UFT membership in the 30 schools she represents;
she also collaborates with the Superintendent and other public offi-
cials, administration, parent groups, and local community organizations
on an ongoing basis; and
WHEREAS, Among the many initiatives she has undertaken to improve life
in the District 21 community, Judy Gerowitz is justly proud to have,
some years ago, reintroduced the District 21 UFT Scholarship Dinner
Dance, which enables each Chapter Leader in the district to provide a
scholarship to a deserving student in his or her school; and
WHEREAS, With Judy Gerowitz throughout have been her husband Stu,
their children Julie and David, and their granddaughters Emma and Abby,
all of whom are proud to be part of her life and rejoice in her accom-
plishments; and
WHEREAS, Judy Gerowitz has distinguished herself in her profession and
in her community and truly merits the recognition of this Legislative
Body; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Judy Gerowitz upon the occasion of her designation for special
recognition at the 44th Annual Dinner Dance of the United Progressive
Club on May 6, 2010; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Judy Gerowitz.
