LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending the Fort Greene Council, Inc. upon the
occasion of hosting its inaugural Awards Dinner

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize that the
quality and character of life in the communities across New York State
are reflective of the concerned and dedicated efforts of those organiza-
tions and individuals who would devote themselves to the welfare of the
community and its citizenry; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to commend the Fort
Greene Council, Inc. upon the occasion of hosting its inaugural Awards
Dinner on Wednesday, May 19, 2010, at the Palm House in the Brooklyn
Botanical Gardens; and
WHEREAS, On this special day, the Fort Greene Council, Inc. will honor
the following individuals: Beverly J. Rutherford, DHR Budget Coordina-
tor, SUNY Donwnstate Medical Center, Community Service Award; Reverend
Cornelius Brown, Minister of Stuyvesant Heights Christian Church, Commu-
nity Service Award; Tamar E. Ogburn-Harraway, Community Relations Event
Planner, Emblem Health, Community Service Award; John P. Weigand, Au.D.
Director of SUNY/Downstate Audiology Center, Community Service Award;
Mildred Hurlock, Fort Greene Grant Square Center, Trail Blazer Award;
and Shaniya Carrington, Young Minds Out-Of-School Time (OST) Program,
Shooting Star Award; and
WHEREAS, Since 1973, the Fort Greene Council, Inc. has provided
services primarily to senior citizens in Central Brooklyn; its mission
is to address critical needs of the elderly in Central Brooklyn, and in
its commitment to serve the community, the Council expanded its focus to
encompass two Day Care Centers; and
WHEREAS, In 1982 and 1984 respectively, the Fort Greene Council, Inc.
became the sponsoring organization for the Young Minds Day Care Center
and Bedford Avenue Family and Group Day Care Center, providing group,
after school and family day care; the Universal Pre-Kindergarten Program
became a part of its child care programs in 1998; and
WHEREAS, Currently, with over 33 years of experience, the Fort Greene
Council, Inc. sponsors 14 Senior Centers and two Day Care Centers;
Senior Centers provide comprehensive services to the elderly including
breakfast, lunch, home delivered meals, educational and recreational
programs and activities, legal assistance, social services, transporta-
tion services, and information and referral services; and
WHEREAS, Likewise, the Day Care Programs have been an integral part of
the Bedford Stuyvesant Fort Greene Communities in Brooklyn, providing
quality early childhood education; its Universal Pre-Kindergarten
provides services to children four years of age and its Out-Of-School
Time Program serves school age children from Grades 1 through 6; and
WHEREAS, In September of 1990, the Fort Greene Council, Inc. launched
JAZZ 966 to promote jazz in the community to seniors and the public at
large; on Friday nights, Jazz 966 provides a warm, comfortable and fami-
ly setting for jazz in Central Brooklyn; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individ-
uals and organizations of such noble aims and accomplishments are
brought to our attention; they should be celebrated and recognized by
all the citizens of the great State of New York; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend the Fort Greene Council, Inc. upon the occasion of hosting its
inaugural Awards Dinner; and be it further
RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Fort Greene Council, Inc., and to the aforementioned
honorees.
