Honoring Donald Tannen upon the occasion of his induction into the New York State Veterans Hall of Fame

LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring veteran Donald Tannen, a member of the
United States Navy during World War II, for his many years of dedicated
service to our Nation's veterans

WHEREAS, Members of the United States Armed Forces, who served so faith-
fully and courageously in wars in which our Nation's freedom was at
stake, as well as in the preservation of peace during peacetime, deserve
the highest commendation of this Legislative Body; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
veteran Donald Tannen, a member of the United States Navy during World
War II, for his many years of dedicated service to our Nation's veter-
ans; and
WHEREAS, A strong advocate for veterans, Donald Tannen has been
instrumental in the restoration of the Van Cortlandt Park Memorial
Grove, a project that has recently been initiated due to his activism;
this grove of trees in Van Cortlandt Park, Bronx, New York, is a memori-
al to servicemen who died in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam; and
WHEREAS, The memorial had fallen into disrepair over the decades, and
was in a deplorable condition when Donald Tannen brought it to the
attention of the community; because of his efforts, newspapers and tele-
vision stations broadcast stories about the Van Cortlandt Park Memorial
Grove, and the Parks Department was urged to make restorations; and
WHEREAS, A grant provided the necessary funding in order for the Parks
Department to begin the restoration project; and
WHEREAS, Donald Tannen has received several military awards, including
the World War II Victory Medal, the American Campaign Medal, the Navy
Unit Commendation Ribbon, and the Combat Action Ribbon; and
WHEREAS, In addition, Donald Tannen has been the recipient of the
Community Service Award from Bronx Community Board 8; he has made a
strong commitment to the memory of all fallen servicemen, and is proving
to be a true asset to society; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body, representing the people of the State
of New York, is very pleased to have this opportunity to express its
gratitude to Donald Tannen, as well as all the men and women of the
United States Armed Forces for their tremendous sacrifices made for our
Nation and for the benefit of all Americans; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor veteran Donald Tannen, a member of the United States Navy during
World War II, for his many years of dedicated service to our Nation's
veterans; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to United States Navy veteran Donald Tannen.
