LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 100th Anniversary of Mt. Olivet
Baptist Church of Rochester, New York, to be celebrated on June 6, 2010

WHEREAS, Religious institutions, and the many spiritual, social and
educational benefits they confer, play a vital role in the development
of the moral fabric of a responsible citizenry; and
WHEREAS, It is the tradition of this State and this Nation to pay
tribute to those institutions and individuals who have contributed to
the ethical and spiritual values of their communities; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body takes pleasure in commemorating the
100th Anniversary of Mt. Olivet Baptist Church of Rochester, New York;
and
WHEREAS, The theme of the Centennial celebration is "100 years of
Walking in Faith: Preserving Our Past, Building Our Future, Winning
Souls for Christ" and will focus on tangible ways to extend Mt. Olivet
Baptist Church's ministry to those who need it most in the community;
and
WHEREAS, As an extension of its 100th Anniversary, Mt. Olivet Baptist
Church will sponsor a Walk-a-thon on Sunday, June 6, 2010; members and
friends will not only participate in heart healthy exercise but they
will raise funds to expand the church's ministry and better serve fami-
lies within the community; and
WHEREAS, Mt. Olivet Baptist Church holds the distinction of being the
first Baptist Church established in Rochester for people of color;
today, it has a diverse membership of approximately 700 persons that
live in Rochester and surrounding suburbs; members include people from
all professions, races and cultures; and
WHEREAS, As a covenant community, the members of Mt. Olivet Baptist
Church endeavor to build the whole community in order to serve the world
in which we exist; and
WHEREAS, Throughout its distinguished history, Mt. Olivet Baptist
Church has been committed to expanding its social ministry in order to
improve the lives of men, women, children and families; and
WHEREAS, Under the able leadership of Senior Pastor, Reverend Rickey
Bernard Harvey, Mt. Olivet Baptist Church stands on the threshold of
tomorrow, prepared to meet the challenges of the coming decades while
retaining that spiritual resolve which characterizes its past; and
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to take note of
enduring religious institutions and to bring such institutions to the
attention of the people of this Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 100th Anniversary of Mt. Olivet Baptist Church of
Rochester, New York, to be observed on June 6, 2010, fully confident
that this commemoration reflects the belief in those values which
enhance the dignity and purpose of life; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Reverend Rickey Bernard Harvey, Senior Pastor, Mt. Olivet
Baptist Church, Rochester, New York.
